SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Not a Good Look” Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

The National Football League and perhaps Roger Goodell as well may be headed for a reckoning. The lawsuit brought by former Miami Dolphins’ Coach Brian Flores appears to be pretty damning on its own. But what is much more troubling is the assertion that Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross offered Flores $100,000 per game to lose. Former Browns and Raiders Coach Hue Jackson then doubled down and said he was offered similar deals while in Cleveland. If one or both are proven true then Ross will be forced to sell his team and Cleveland could face serious repercussions as well. There is even some talk that Goodell may have known what the Browns were doing. To be honest, would it really surprise any of us if that were true? This is a guy who completely covered up the Spygate scandal by destroying the tapes and then swept Deflategate under the rug. The matter at hand currently however is sad and unfortunate. The lack of black head coaches is appalling and the sacrifice Flores is making is admirable. I say that because he is likely never going to be a head coach again in the NFL whether he wins the case or not. Regardless of what side you fall on this is yet another awful look for the NFL.

Tweet of the Day… One of the more honest, sad, yet funnier things on a professional athlete I’ve ever seen. Highly recommend all Steelers’ fans check it out on HBO Max.

Family Ties

The Steelers spent a lot of time watching Connor Heyward, brother of Cam, yesterday at the Senior Bowl. Mark Kaboly of The Athletic was one of several reporting this. While it would be a great story in terms of him being drafted and joining his brother, what would be the overall point? Sure the Steelers could cut Derek Watt, who they’ve absolutely wasted as a fullback, and bring on a cheaper version. But is Matt Canada suddenly going to go back to his heavy use of the H-back? Would Heyward be as valuable as Watt on Special Teams? Don’t get me wrong, Heyward is really athletic and capable of lining up as a fullback, H-back or tight end and could be a welcome addition. But if Canada doesn’t use him what’s the point?

Munch

With former Steelers’ Offensive Line Coach Mike Munchak now a coaching free agent, there has been a lot of speculation that he could return to the Steel City. Let’s remember that Munchak went to Denver in part because it put him closer to his family and as far as I know that family is still there. Also keep in mind that what the Steelers are trying to do offensively is different than when he was last year and he may not fit quite as well as he once did. Fans see a name and often think it’s a natural match but you have to look much closer at the situation. I’m not saying it won’t happen but my gut feeling tells me the Steelers will look elsewhere after Chris Morgan headed to Chicago.
