SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Nix Times Two” Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers’ Fans.

Yesterday you may have caught the tweet from Steelers.com’s Missi Matthews. She had a short video of Steelers’ rookie Sutton Smith in action. Smith you may recall was a linebacker/EDGE Rusher at Northern Illinois and was taken in this year’s draft. If you check out the tweet below, that doesn’t exactly look like a guy working on his pass rusher skills now does it?

Smith of course would not be the first former defender from a MAC school to transition to the offensive side of the ball. Current Steelers’ fullback and Special Teams’ Ace Rosie Nix also starred defensively in college at Kent State. What we could do here is jump to conclusions but instead I’m going to give you a more rational take here. Smith is built like a fire hydrant and actually plays like his hair is on fire but his size would appear to limit him quite a bit in the NFL defensively. The Steelers have always liked versatility in their players and giving Smith a shot at H-Back falls in line with that thinking. This is the time you do these types of experiments though, in OTAs, rather than in Training Camp. He’s a likable young man and he’s not going to get removed from this roster without a fight and I think that’s exactly why the Steelers drafted him. Rosie Nix worked out well so why not swing for the fences again?

Actual Tweet of the Day… It would have been easy for Da Beard to drift off in retirement but he continues to do good things in the community.

The best news to come out of the first week of OTAs this week is that there were not any serious injuries. It’s something you always concern yourself with (ask the Washington Redskins) but can’t do much to avoid. So far so good on the Steelers’ front.

Can we please stop with the “Steelers’ Fan Snoop Dogg” social media posts? The guy wears jerseys from every team in the league yet calls himself a ‘Steelers fan.’ Sorry. In my book if you’re a fan of a team then that’s the gear you wear. Exclusively.

As I discussed earlier this week, Mike Hilton is an Exclusive Rights Free Agent meaning the team holds all of the cards. He hasn’t signed it yet in hopes of getting a long-term deal. This eventually worked for Alejandro Villanueva but this is far from the same situation. Much of Hilton’s fate may depend on Justin Layne and how much progress. If it’s enough, it bumps Steve Nelson to the slot leaving Hilton out of a job. Long way to go before that though.

And you probably thought this kind of thing only happened in other NFL cities. Think again… “Woman Accused of Beating Mother Over Volume of Steelers’ Game.”

Lastly, I wish everyone a happy and fun Memorial Day Weekend. Please take a moment to reflect on why many of us will have an extra day off on Monday. So many who have served have given the greatest sacrifice of all and they need to be remembered.

My thoughts heading into the season. I think we are going to find out that Bell and Brown were products of the Steelers and not that the Steelers were good because of them. I see a 10 or 11 win season led by Big Ben and maybe even some success in the playoffs.
