SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Nelson News” Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

I wanted to take the opportunity to explain how we got to this point. First of all, Steven Nelson looking for a trade had nothing to do with the signing of JuJu Smith-Schuster. I say this because many assumed that in order to sign JuJu they needed to trade Nelson. That’s totally wrong. The Steelers went to Nelson looking extend his deal. They were seeking salary cap relief and Nelson’s play warranted an extension. Plus it would help lower the cap hit the Steelers were incurring. Nelson and his agent however had a number in mind that the Steelers weren’t going to meet. I have no problem with a guy being confident in himself but Nelson looking to be paid as a top three cornerback is outrageous. Yes, he’s been solid and a good free agent signing but where he and his agent are getting off asking for that kind of money is beyond me. When the Steelers made it clear they weren’t going to come close to those numbers the permission to seek a trade was given. Now the problem is just who would trade for him and what can the Steelers possibly get? Keep in mind that any team he’s traded to will likely be asked by Nelson to give him what he’s looking for financially and that won’t be easy. Nelson’s agent may find a deal but if it isn’t one the Steelers like then it’s not happening.

Another example of National writers getting it wrong.

This comment is from Peter King in his “Football Morning in America” piece today. If this is the way it falls . . . I don’t understand PITTSBURGH choosing JuJu Smith-Schuster, a good player at a plentiful position, over Steven Nelson, the steady cornerback who’d played more snaps than any corner on the roster over the past two years. Not sure if Nelson will be dealt, but if he is, the Steelers are weakening a position that’s traditionally a weak spot. When fans read this stuff they think it gospel. As I said above one did not have to do with the other.

Tweet of the Day… Ha! I brought up the word “Hamburglar” to my students and none of them knew what it was.

More OL Depth

The Steelers signed offensive tackle Joe Haeg over the weekend. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2016 Draft. This was the same draft his NDSU teammate Carson Wentz was taken. He started almost 30 games in his first two seasons then he became a backup most recently with Tampa Bay this past season. He started three games for the eventual Super Bowl Champions.

Pro Days

There’s a lot of schools on the docket for scouts, coaches and GMs today. I’ll be surprised if the Steelers don’t have a big presence at Florida State, Iowa and Missouri.

  • Bowling Green

Watson

There are now as many as 12 different accusations against Texans’ QB Deshaun Watson citing some for of sexual harassment. I don’t see how the team could possibly trade him right now. I am in no way suggesting he’s guilty of anything that’s been alleged. What I’m saying is that no team will want to give up a king’s ransom in picks and players only to have him in trouble with the law and away from the game. I’ll be stunned if any movement actually happens.
