SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Mullet Man Cometh’ Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

With Robert Spillane leaving for a boat load of money provided by the Las Vegas Raiders, the Pittsburgh Steelers were in dire need of linebacking help. With just Myles Jack and Mark Robinson on the roster, this situation was bad. Enter the man with the mullet! Well, I’m not sure he still has it and we’ll find out today when he’s introduced but Cole Holcomb is the newest Steelers’ linebacker. The former walk-on at North Carolina was not invited to the Combine four years ago but lit up his Pro Day with an 11′ foot broad jump and better three cone numbers than Devin Bush. To put it in simple layman’s terms, Holcomb is a guy who plays like his hair is on fire. Many have already referred to him as ‘Robert Spillane 2.0’ but I don’t think that’s quite fair. When you watch Holcomb on tape you will see an immediate upgrade in athleticism. Holcomb covers a lot of ground in a hurry. I also believe he will be better than Spillane in coverage but I wouldn’t go so far as to say he’s good at it. There are issues there in man coverage and he isn’t a traditional ‘stack and shed’ linebacker. At this time, I do not yet know the financials, but this was a good signing by Omar Khan and company. I think you’ll see this young man endear himself to Steelers Nation rather quickly.

UPDATES: The Steelers have agreed to terms with ILB Elandon Roberts and they have cut ILB Myles Jack.

The Podcast

We recorded episode 311 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc last night. We spent the majority of our time discussing the players who have left and those who have arrived via free agency. As always, we provide you with our strong opinions and we had a visit from Casey Kasem!

Tweet of the Day… The first of a few I do believe.

Orlando. And I’m Not Talking Florida.

The Cincinnati Bengals signed former Chiefs’ left tackle Orlando Brown, Jr last evening. More interesting however is the fact that ‘reportedly’ the Steelers showed more than passing interest in Brown. Keep in mind, that ‘passing interest’ could have been nothing more than a phone call or it could have been serious negotiations. What it does suggest however is that the Steelers are not closing the door on the idea of upgrading their left tackle position. They have already brought in an upgrade at guard so perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised. This bears some serious watching.

Of Note…

The Steelers did not take action on any of their four Restricted Free Agents. WR Steven Sims, G/C JC Hassenauer, CB James Pierre and RB Jeremy McNichols. These four now become unrestricted free agents and can hit the open market. This does not mean that one or all of these guys won’t re-sign with the Steelers but I do find Sims and Pierre a bit interesting. Sims was a solid contributor after the trade of Chase Claypool. He also took over the punt return duties after Gunner Olszewski’s muff against New England. Pierre has seen solid minutes both as a starter and as a reserve in the last couple of seasons. Plus, this is a position of serious need. I also suspect we’ll hear of Tyson Alualu’s intentions very soon as well with the new league year having started. I’ll be very surprised if he’s back.

Prospect Profiles

We’ve started our NFL Draft Coverage here at SCB and the first of our Position Profiles is out. We’ve made the decision that rather than make extensive profiles of each player, we are doing smaller ones and grouping them by position. This allows us to easier update information as Pro Days and the Combine provide more info.
