SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Mocking” Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

We have finally reached Draft Week 2023!! Perhaps most importantly is the fact that you’ll no longer have to see your buddy’s 312th mock draft since February. You know the one where he has the Steelers making seven trades in order to get more picks? I digress. Personally, I don’t like mock drafts because predicting these picks is often like predicting lottery numbers. Yeah, you might get a couple right but you’ll get a lot more wrong. But it goes much deeper than too. I don’t care how closely you follow your favorite team, in this case the Steelers, the bottom line is that you have no idea what Omar Khan, Mike Tomlin, Andy Weidl and company are thinking right now let alone on Draft night. In other words, we read the tea leaves and we guess and that’s exactly what I did with my final mock draft. I published it on Saturday and just to be clear, I do my mocks based strictly on what I believe the Steelers – not me – will do.

First Round Podcast

As usual we will be broadcasting our weekly SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc on Thursday night but this week we are planning to be going much earlier with the Draft kicking off at 8pmET. We haven’t decided as to the exact time we are firing it up but follow out social media accounts for the live links. This is always one of our favorite shows of the year.

Tweet of the Day… Sadly this is incredibly accurate these days.

Random Draft Thoughts

If there’s a guy who is going to “slide” I believe it’s Will Levis and I can’t really put my finger on why. I just think there’s enough uncertainty around his game that teams won’t be willing to pull the trigger so quickly… The Steelers now have another punter (Braden Mann) in town to compete with Pressley Harvin III who has been inconsistent in his first two seasons to put it mildly. Prior to bringing in Mann, I would have suggested a punter could be drafted with one of those seventh round picks but now I see less of a chance… One of my favorite Draft “what ifs” is if Anthony Richardson or Bijan Robinson was still there at 17. My first thought is that someone would be beating the door down to trade up and get one of them but can you imagine that scenario? Chances of taking Robinson are slim but Najee Harris has a lot mileage on him already… When it comes to Draft coverage I typically end up watching ESPN. I think the overall knowledge and personalities are a tad better.

Prospect Profiles

We’ve started our NFL Draft Coverage here at SCB and the first of our Position Profiles is out. We’ve made the decision that rather than make extensive profiles of each player, we are doing smaller ones and grouping them by position. This allows us to easier update information as Pro Days and the Combine provide more info.
