SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Minkah Money” Edition

Fitzpatrick of the Steelers. steelcityblitz.com

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

What’s the old saying? Where there’s smoke there’s fire? Numerous sources are reporting that the Pittsburgh Steelers are close to signing all-pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to a new deal which would make him the highest paid safety in the game. If accurate, that would put Fitzpatrick over the $17.5 million dollar per season that Seattle’s Jamal Adams currently makes. We’ve estimated for several months that Justin Simmons of Denver was a more likely target. He has a per season average of $15.25 million. Debates over just how much Minkah is worth are fair. He started the 2021 season slowly, recovered his previous form and then spent the latter portion of the season tackling running backs who made it through the Steelers’ front seven. Whenever you see your free safety is your leading tackler then you know you have a problem up front. Fitzpatrick is best when he can drop and watch the action. He’s excellent at baiting the quarterback and when the offense is running the ball at will, that skill is rarely allowed to be deployed. Make no mistake, Minkah is worth being paid as one of the top safeties in the league, but if he has to essentially play linebacker again then his best skills are wasted.

Tweet of the Day… Jared gets it.

QB Graffiti?

I came to a conclusion yesterday that I’m not overly thrilled about. I’ve decided that there’s more than enough ‘writing on the wall’ to go ahead and accept that the Steelers are drafting a quarterback in this Draft. Which one? I have no idea. Which round? Your guess is as good as mine. Either way I think it’s happening.

Good for Pete Carroll

It was reported yesterday that Seattle Coach Pete Carroll blasted the NFL owners for their unwillingness to hire more minority candidates. According to Adam Schefter, Carroll was very intense and adamant that owners need to “start accepting people who are different from them.” While this was in front of the 31 other head coaches and general managers and not the owners, word has it the owners were not pleased. That’s good! The truth often hurts! No one is suggesting that you can’t hire the best candidate for a coaching job but the blatant ignoring of clearly better black candidates is appalling. Adam Gase has had two head coaching jobs for crying out loud.

Hamilton

No, not the Broadway musical, I’m talking about Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton. He’s been high on draft boards since the season ended but then last week at his Pro Day in South Bend, his numbers didn’t quite pop as well as many expected them to and I’m OK with that. If this kid falls to the Steelers at 20 then they better run, not walk, to the Commissioner with the card. Hamilton is big, tackles well, covers well and would be a perfect compliment to Minkah Fitzpatrick. Do I think he falls that far? No I do not, but I didn’t think David DeCastro would fall into our laps either. I can dream!
