SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Mentor” Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

There’s been a lot of talk this week about whether or not a team’s incumbent quarterback has a duty to mentor the new guy coming in. We’ve been through this before in Pittsburgh with Ben Roethlisberger following the selection of Mason Rudolph. This past week it came to light again when the Titans’ Ryan Tannehill said “it wasn’t his job to mentor Malik Willis.”  I’m in the minority here (according to social media) in that I agree 100% with Tannehill. This is the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE. This isn’t Pop Warner, this isn’t a tradition-rich high school program or a college program either where ‘passing the torch of tradition’ is part of the job. The NFL is a business, it’s cutthroat. Every single day someone is coming for your job. If your club drafts a QB in the top three rounds then you flat-out know they’ve just sent you a message. Therefore, why would you be expected to mentor the guy who is there to take your job? Imagine your boss tells you that you’re fired effective the end of the year AND you also have to train the person replacing you. Is that really going to sit well with you? No one is suggesting that you ignore the new guy, you should be a decent human and answer questions or make suggestions, but this is a business after all. Our own personal experiences of little league or high school sports are not comparable to the NFL. Should Tannehill have chosen his words better? Yes, I think he should have but that doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s right.

The Podcast

Last night we recorded episode 269 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc. We discussed our final thoughts on the Steelers’ Draft and a whole lot more. Grab a beverage and join us!

Tweet of the Day… Kevin Colbert is officially done on May 31st. They are having second interviews with two outside candidates so anything remains possible.

Depth Issues

If you had to pick one position where the Steelers currently find themselves with issues of depth I would point to the edge. One of the bigger surprises of this draft was the fact that the Steelers did not select an EDGE rusher. If there wasn’t a guy they truly believed could help them then I can understand that but here’s the situation they have. The starters are T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. After that? Are they going to rely on Derrek Tuszka? I firmly believe what will happen here is that the Steelers will wait things out as the summer moves on and teams begin to make roster moves. A veteran or two will emerge much in the same way that Melvin Ingram did. Of course finding a guy that understands the role is important as well.
