SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘KISS Principle’ Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

With OTAs underway, I always find it a bit comical how people take these “deep dives” into the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense as if they’re trying to crack nuclear codes. Even at its’ most professional and high level form, football always has and always will come down to the ‘KISS Principle.’ If you’re looking for some reference to Gene Simmons here then I apologize because that’s not where I’m going. In this case, KISS is an acronym for ‘Keep It Simple Stupid.’ I realize that calling someone “stupid” is a bit harsh but for purposes of this acronym I’d say it’s warranted. In this particular case we are talking about Steelers Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada. Because he will have an improved (we sure as hell hope so) offensive line, numerous weapons and a young QB with a year under his belt, expectations are high and they should be. But while pundits pull their hair out trying to come up with the best way for Canada to get the most out of this unit I really don’t think it’s that difficult. He has Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren to pound the ball with and receivers like Diontae Johnson, George Pickens and Pat Freiermuth to throw to. There is no need to get fancy here. You run the ball, set up play-action and go from there. Are there certain things, like route concepts for example, that have to get better? Hell yes! But this doesn’t require reinventing the wheel. Football is – after all these years – still about blocking and tackling and finding the best matchup for your unit on every given play. No coordinator does this with 100% accuracy but I have always found that the more complex you make things the more difficult they can be to accomplish. Keep it simple Matt and let if flow from there.

Tweet of the Day… Unbelievable.

Bell

You may have seen a blurb by ESPN over the weekend about former Steeler Le’Veon Bell. He appeared on a podcast and claimed that he smoked marijuana before games. I’m hardly surprised by this and knowing Bell’s history I don’t think you are either. Furthermore, Bell has only himself to blame for not staying in Pittsburgh and continuing what would have been a nice career. Perhaps he and the rest of us should move on.

Pickens Has Goals

Steelers wide receiver George Pickens recently said that his goal is to make the Pro Bowl this coming year after being “snubbed” in his rookie campaign. 52 receptions and over 800 yards receiving is good but I’m not sure it was “Pro Bowl worthy.” That said, I like his attitude. The young man is betting on himself and I’d much rather he was talking like this versus the complete opposite.
