SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Italian Army Salute” Edition

Good Friday to You Steelers’ Fans!

Many of you will recall the days of ‘Lambert’s Lunatics’ or ‘Gerela’s Gorillas’ during the 1970’s but perhaps the most identifiable of them all was Franco’s Italian Army. I first learned from the crew over at StillerGang that one of the founders, Mr. Albert Vento, passed away recently. If you aren’t old enough to recall the green army helmets and the Italian flags then I strongly urge you to do some research about your favorite team. So popular was the Army that even fellow Italians like Frank Sinatra were inducted into the movement. Mr. Vento and his partner Tony Stagno created the Army in 1972 and used their pizzeria as the base of operations. Perhaps it is not coincidental that Franco announced just this week that he’ll be opening a pizzeria inside of Heinz Field. Cheers to you Mr. Vento! RIP.

The World Cup is down to the final 16 teams and I have a real bone to pick with one of the tie-breakers. Japan and Senegal each had the same record, same goal differential and tied each other head-to-head. The Japanese were awarded the spot in the round of 16 because they had fewer yellow/red cards than did Senegal. These ‘fair play’ points are well-intended but they are incredibly subjective. Cards can be given for any number of violations but what is a card in one game is not a card in another. They need to find a better way. Then again, the final will likely come down to penalty kicks which drives me nuts too.

Tweet of the Day… Pretty cool! They have Sid and now Big Ben!

Got some potential changes coming to SCB. Keep you informed as they unfold!

I hope that Antonio Brown learned some valuable lessons about his rant to the media during Mini-Camp. As you recall, he said he had no “freedom” because fans were everywhere and it was hard for him to work out because fans always showed up. This was among several other things he expressed. Since then, his social media accounts haven’t changed. From working out with Cam Newton to showing videos of fans at his workouts at Florida International, AB has continued to put his life out there for all to see. Maybe the lack of freedom wasn’t all that bad?

Vince Williams had an interesting tweet recently about defensive scheme changes. He essentially said fans have to stop over-analyzing what the team is doing. I think he has a point. The Steelers aren’t going to change too much but every year there are always tweaks based on personnel and opponents. Are there going to be some schematic changes this year? I believe there are but I’ll take Williams’ advice; I’m not going to get too worked up until I see things for myself.

Have a great weekend Steeler Nation!
