SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Held Hostage” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers’ Fans!

We are now less than a week away from the franchise tag deadline which means that if the Steelers and Le’Veon Bell can’t reach a long-term deal by that point then Bell plays 2017 for $12.12 million. Somewhat forgotten in the last couple of weeks have been Stephon Tuitt and Alejandro Villanueva who are in some ways being ‘held hostage.’ I say this because it’s highly doubtful (not impossible but doubtful) that their deals get done before the franchise deadline passes. In a perfect world, the Steelers would get these deals done soon but this is far from a perfect world.

Profootballtalk.com yesterday revealed that former Steelers’ Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians’ new book tells us nothing we didn’t already know about Ben Roethlisberger in his first few years. We know Big Ben was arrogant and a total jerk. Wish I could say I wouldn’t have been at that age with that fame and that money but I can’t. My concern is Roethlisberger TODAY and I’m sure others feel the same. There doesn’t seem to be much cause for worry there.

Just in case you need the schedule for Training Camp here it is courtesy steelers.com.

Obviously the wide receiver battle is going to be one of the main focuses of camp in 2017 and I’ll be honest; I’m not 100% sure how it shakes out. Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant and JuJu Smith-Schuster are gimmes. Let me explain Smith-Schuster for a second. He’s a gimme not because he’s going to play a lot but because you don’t put a second round draft pick on the practice squad. He would be scooped up by another team within seconds. Anyway, if we assume the Steelers keep six receivers, then who are the other three? Sammie Coates, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Eli Rogers and Demarcus Ayres are the favorites but one or maybe even two of those guys may not make the roster. It’s a good problem to have but that doesn’t mean it won’t be difficult.

Have a great Tuesday Steeler Nation!
