SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Game Week’ Edition

Najee Harris of the Steelers. steelcityblitz.com

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will take to the grass of Acrisure Stadium for the first time later this week. It will also mark the first time they do so with the new name attached to it. For the first time since the facility opened in 2001, it is no longer Heinz Field. The first preseason game (vs Seattle this year) is important for numerous reasons with none bigger than being able to hit someone who isn’t on your team. For five players, this will be it. The first roster cut down is on the 16th when those players will be released. While playing well is important for everyone, the spotlight this week will be on the quarterbacks. Let’s not act otherwise. Fans want to see with their own eyes who they believe is playing the best and who deserves the job.

Tweet of the Day… So simple, yet so damn fun.

The Running Backs

If you think Mike Tomlin is disappointed that Najee Harris has had to sit out some practices after being stepped on you’d be right. He’s probably a little upset he can’t have his number one guy, but behind the exterior is a sheepish grin that says, “I’m just fine with Najee not taking ANY sort of abuse or chances in practice.” This is also an opportunity for other running backs to display what they’ve got. Make no mistake, Benny Snell is still the top reserve, especially should he need to pinch hit for a game or two. But, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s the first guy off the bench to give Harris a blow. A guy to keep an eye on is Jaylen Warren. He’s currently listed fourth on the depth chart behind Anthony McFarland. He’s had a very good camp and has been a thorn in the side of the defense with powerful running and a style that makes him difficult to tackle. Can he participate on Special Teams is always one of the first questions that must be asked. Master Teague recently came in when newly signed Jeremy McNichols went down with a shoulder injury. He had a nice career at Ohio State and his fate will likely rest on his preseason game performances because he’s likely to get a lot of carries. This is going to be very interesting to watch over these three games.

Help Us Out!

Those of you that visit SCB routinely know this is pretty much a one man writing operation. Ian will begin his terrific coverage of WPIAL High School Football this week and add in some Steelers’ stuff when he can and Gordon will return with his weekly Steelers History articles as well. Knowing this, is there anything you’d like to see from us that we aren’t doing? Anything we can improve upon? A lot of it depends on time and access but I want to do whatever we can to make your experience better. As we begin celebrating 10 years, it’s the least I can ask. Leave us a comment below the article! Thanks.

Numbers Game

It looks increasingly more like the Steelers may keep seven defensive linemen. Cam Heyward, Tyson Alualu, Larry Ogunjobi, Isaiahh Loudermilk, Chris Wormley, Montravious Adams and Demarvin Leal. Normally they keep six and if they do, who is the odd man out? Injuries could dictate this decision. If Alualu or Ogunjobi aren’t 100% ready to go then that’s a possibility. You aren’t cutting Leal or risking him being on the practice squad. Loudermilk is on the up so that leaves Adams. He was a huge signing last season off the Saints’ practice squad. He plays hard and is extremely quick for a big man. So ultimately if they do keep seven, then there has to be a position that has one less player. Predicting where that could be is difficult as every, single spot is crucial.
