SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Days Away’ Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

We are just a few days away from seeing the Pittsburgh Steelers report to Training Camp in Latrobe but hey, who’s counting? We are that’s for damn sure! I was asked this week on social media about going to Camp by a first-timer who is planning to attend. To put it simply, keep an eye on the weather. If bad weather is around they’ll cancel practice and stay indoors. Secondly, Pack your patience. There are thousands of others doing the same thing you are and getting into St. Vincent is not easy. Lastly, it depends on what you’re there for – autographs? to watch? to just take it all in? – in terms of where to position yourself. Some like the stands while others (like myself) prefer the hill. I put together this handy guide several years ago. You may find it useful, or not. Either way, it’s great to reach this week where our Steelers are back.

The Latest Pod

In case you missed it, we recorded episode 326 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc of South Florida on Thursday night. We covered Alex Highsmith’s new contract, the pending extension for Mike Tomlin, the running back market and much more. The show originates from the Bradshaw Bourbon Studio!

Tweet of the Day…  There are few things better than SCB Grill Pics! A tradition unlike any other!

Is Harvin in Trouble?

When the Steelers bring in competition for their kickers, punters and long snappers, it’s usually done with one thing in mind; take a load off of the starters. Training Camp can be long for kickers and punters. You have to get your reps in but at the same time, you don’t want these guys over-doing it. The other big reason is to evaluate these “camp legs” in case you may need them down the road. All that said, I think Pressley Harvin III has some real competition and most fans would say “It’s about time.” His rookie season ups and downs were largely excused as Harvin’s father was dying of cancer. Last season however, we didn’t really see the improvement we thought we would. Enter Braden Mann who punted over 200 times for the Jets in his first three years. His average punt is better than Harvin’s but he doesn’t drop quite as many inside the 20 and that may be the only thing that saves Harvin. Don’t dismiss that he holds for Chris Boswell on kicks too but that can’t be the ultimate decision maker here. The Steelers have to have a punter who can flip the field and Harvin just doesn’t do it often enough in my opinion. Maybe I’m seeing this more contested than it will be but I know this; Harvin should be pushed in Camp.

Running Back Zoom

A group of running backs including Nick Chubb, Derrick Henry and Austin Ekeler among others got together on a Zoom call to discuss the plight of today’s running back contracts. Sadly, nothing these guys say or do will matter for them as the current collective bargaining agreement won’t end until these guys are likely gone. If they are doing it for the next generation then props to them. Here’s a word of warning to all Steelers’ fans. This same thing is going to happen with Najee Harris soon enough so buckle up.
