SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Days Are Numbered” Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers Fans.

One has to wonder about Steelers’ cornerback Artie Burns. The team has already declined his fifth year option and he’s now buried on the depth chart. Is it at all possible that his days are now numbered as a Pittsburgh Steeler? I have to think so but I also don’t see the Steelers outright releasing him any time soon though either. What that likely means is that the Steelers will shop him around. Do not expect them to get a return of riches here either. My guess is that the Steelers can expect to receive at best a 6th or 7th round pick for him. Ability and potential have never been an issue for Burns but since his rookie season he has drastically declined due to mental issues and just overall poor play. I’m not saying a trade is going to happen but I am suggesting he isn’t likely to be a Steeler for too much longer unless there has been a drastic turnaround.

One of the guys expected to keep Burns on the bench is rookie Justin Layne. He continues to be the only draftee yet to sign his first contract.

Chris presents his very first 53-man roster prediction for the Steelers.

Tweet of the Day… The great Dave DiCello with another beauty from the Burgh.

In case you missed it or in case you intentionally missed it… Antonio Brown was back in Pittsburgh yesterday. He was in court to deal with his citation for driving just a little over the speed limit last year. I never thought I’d be so happy to see a guy – once so popular – gone from the Steelers.

I hate to be the voice of reason sometimes but it’s what I do. That in mind, I too have heard how great many of the Steelers’ rookies looked last week and I’m thrilled for this but let’s pump the brakes. Once Training Camp rolls around and the pads are on and there’s contact and full speed play THEN I’ll start to get more excited about these guys. For now, I’m tempering my judgments.

From the post-gazette.com chat….

Don from Youngstown: Who do you expect to be our nickel corner? Hilton got exposed last year and I’m not confident he’s the guy anymore.
Brian Batko: I suppose the possibilities here are Mike Hilton, Cam Sutton, Justin Layne and Steven Nelson. But I don’t think Justin Layne will beat out Nelson for the outside job as a rookie, and Layne doesn’t have much slot experience. So, making a prediction at your request on May 14, I’ll say it’s Hilton’s job to lose.

I see no way Layne plays slot. If anything, Nelson slides in there and Layne plays the boundary. I’ve been wrong before but I feel good about this statement.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
