SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Danger Zone” Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

I figured “Danger Zone” was appropriate considering the new ‘Top Gun’ movie was out. Kenny Logins’ classic song belted out when Tom Cruise was jetting through the sky against those pesky Russians. In this particular case, the term ‘danger zone’ is what I call the six week period between the end of mini-camp and the start of Training Camp. This doesn’t just apply to the Steelers but to all NFL players. You see, this is the period when players are untethered. They can travel, vacation, continue training whatever knowing the long NFL season awaits. Unfortunately, some of these young men make poor choices that lead to legal issues or worse. That’s why the classic “no news is good news” applies to this period. In other words, we don’t want to hear a damn thing about our guys unless it’s an Instagram photo of them enjoying the beach or getting in a workout. Just stay out of the Danger Zone please.

Podcast

In case you missed last week’s SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc here it is for your listening and/or viewing pleasure. We covered the end of mini-camp, Deshaun Watson problems for the Browns and a potential replacement for ‘Renegade?’ Always a good time!

Tweet of the Day… Yup.

JuJu

I have a personal policy that I’m going to share with you. Whenever a player leaves the Steelers I unfollow them on social media. Part of the reason is that I don’t want to see them posting about their new team and interacting with new fans and so forth. So when JuJu Smith-Schuster left for Kansas City, I unfollowed him. This doesn’t mean I don’t like JuJu or don’t appreciate his time in Pittsburgh. It’s just what I do. As for JuJu, he was back in Pittsburgh one final time this past weekend and was using the event to raise money for charity. There are many, for whatever reason, that don’t like JuJu. Personally I don’t get it. I wish him well in KC because he made a business decision after all. Would you rather play with Patrick Mahomes or one of the QBs in Pittsburgh?

T.J….

Last week, the usually quiet T.J. Watt got pretty fired up in the locker room over questions to his brother Derek. He was shouting across the locker room at the journalist in question “they don’t even play the same position!” Apparently, Derek Watt was asked about competition with rookie Conner Heyward. T.J. had a point. The Steelers have already designated that Heyward is a ‘tight end.’ That doesn’t mean however that he won’t be used as an H-Back or fullback. Not to mention that Heyward would play for a cheaper price too. I view this simply as a guy looking out for his brother.
