SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Capped” Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

The salary cap for 2021 is finally set. This year the cap is, as expected, lower than it was a year ago coming in at $182.5 million. While lower, this is much better than the starting point of $175 million. According to overthecap.com, the Pittsburgh Steelers are roughly $5 million under the cap. This is important for a couple of reasons. First, the new league year begins Wednesday and all teams must be under the cap. Secondly, the five million is about what the real will need to sign the draft class. So what this means is that the Steelers are far from done restructuring contracts and making roster decisions. Stephon Tuitt remains the leading contender to have his deal reworked. Steven Nelson is another. There will also be discussions about Joe Haden and Vince Williams as well. My long-winded point is that the Steelers are in no position right now to sign free agents. That will change but regardless, the Steelers will do as they always do and fill depth with what free agent money they have.
