SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Big Meeting” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

ESPN is reporting this morning that Ben Roethlisberger will meet with the Steelers next week to discuss his contract and $41 million cap hit. We’ve discussed and laid out the options which include everything from a pay cut to an extension but the bottom line is the team has to get his cap hit lower.  Roethlisberger has gone on the record as saying “money isn’t an issue” which sounds like he’s willing to do whatever it takes get one more year in Pittsburgh. Keep in mind however that the Players’ Union isn’t exactly going to be thrilled if he plays well below his value. Will that be a deal breaker? No it won’t but it’s yet another hurdle to deal with. This big meeting has a very important deadline however. The Steelers have to make a decision on Big Ben by mid-March because there’s no way they are paying him that $15 million roster bonus. If you really put my feet to the fire here I’d guess they’ll do an extension that lowers the hit and has a couple of ‘ghost’ years at the end of it. Then again, I’m just guessing.

The Podcast

We recorded our longest episode ever last night and covered a ton of information on the Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast. From Bruce Arians’ comments on Big Ben to all of the free agents and their futures… It was fun show!

Tweet of the Day… I don’t mean to rub it in but, OK, yes I do.

The Super Bowl

Any Super Bowl that doesn’t involve our Steelers is a tough watch for me. That doesn’t mean I don’t watch it but I struggle especially when I have to see Tom Freaking Brady again. My initial thoughts on this game were that I don’t think the Buccaneers can handle the Chiefs offensively. But as the game has gotten closer my opinion is changing. First, the Chiefs have not been that impressive in the Red Zone during the postseason. They are also playing without two starters on the offensive line and Mike Remmers, who will start at tackle in place of injured Eric Fisher, was abused by Von Miller in Denver’s Super Bowl win over his Carolina Panthers. Combine that with a hot Tampa defense and a running game that I think will surprise people and I find myself taking the Bucs 31-27.
