SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Been a Long Time’ Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

President Lyndon Johnson had signed the Voting Rights Act. The Monkees were formed after over 400 young men auditioned. Mario Lemieux was born in Canada. Joe Namath signed the biggest contract in pro football history at just over $400,000. The year was 1965 and it was also the last time the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Philly. And to be very honest, things don’t look so good in terms of this ugly streak coming to an end. The Eagles are unbeaten. They are coming off their BYE week. Their offense and defense are both playing well and oh by the way, the Steelers are not. Bottom line? It’s been a long time since they’ve won in Philadelphia.

INJURY NOTES: I’m surprised by the number of guys still getting rest for the Eagles despite the fact they are coming off their BYE week. This is more than likely due to routine and not wanting to break that. Lane Johnson looks like he’ll play on Sunday… Larry Ogunjobi has been the Steelers best defensive lineman this year and if he can’t go that’s going to be a serious loss.

Around the North

The task for the Steelers got a tad larger with Baltimore winning in Tampa Bay last night. The Ravens move to 5-3 and I would not be one bit surprised if Baltimore made a move or two at the trade deadline in an effort to hang with the other top teams in the conference. The Bengals play in Cleveland Monday night. They’ve lost 23 of their last 24 trips there and now Joe Burrow is without Ja’Marr Chase for the next 4-6 weeks. As much as I hate to say it, we could use a Browns’ win here.

Big Plays

Sometimes things really aren’t that difficult to figure out. The Pittsburgh Steelers have problems aplenty on offense – this we know – but one thing they’re really lacking is big plays. According to Sharp Football Analysis, the Steelers are 30th in the NFL in explosive plays. Sharp defines these as passes over 20 yards and runs over 10 yards. One thing that has been sorely missed is ‘run after catch’ yards. Because the Steelers throw to the sidelines so often, the ability to get up field is reduced. This has to change and if that means pushing the ball downfield more at the risk of turnovers like we saw Sunday night I’m fine with that.
