SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Banged Up’ Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers Fans.

It wasn’t that long ago that the Pittsburgh Steelers were relatively healthy. Save for the injury to T.J. Watt, the team overall was doing pretty well. Not so much anymore. The entire secondary is banged up. Minkah Fitzpatrick has a bum knee, Ahkello Witherspoon is still battling a hamstring, Levi Wallace has a bad foot and Terrell Edmunds in concussion protocol. We also have Cam Heyward battling elbow and ankle problems and hey, let’s throw Chris Wormley in there with an ankle for the hell of it. The Buffalo Bills have outscored their opponents 63-7 in the second half which does not bode well for a defense that has frequently worn down in the second half. Now you have six starters battling injuries and a rookie QB making his first start, on the road no less, and you’ve got a potential recipe for disaster. To say the Steelers are banged up right now is a brutal understatement.

This week Gordon takes us back to Ben Roethlisberger’s rookie season when the Steelers played their finale in Buffalo having already wrapped up home-field for the postseason.

Head Turner

Last weekend, NFL medical experts got together with their counterparts from The Premier League in the UK. The goal of their meeting was to discuss best practices in regards to concussions and head trauma. I have to admit, I started laughing when I saw this. If you’ve ever watched the Premier League and professional soccer in general the you know that they have even LESS concern about concussions than the NFL does. Two seasons ago I saw a defender from Tottenham Hotspur collide head-to-head with another player. After about ten minutes, he got up and despite being very unsteady on his feet, he was allowed to play. Less than five minutes later, he was puking along the side of the field as he tried to get to the tunnel. I would appreciate it if these professional leagues would just be honest and say they really don’t give a shit about this issue. My guess is this meeting was probably held in a bar where very little on the issue was actually discussed.

You Can’t Have It Both Ways

I know I mentioned this earlier in the week but it bears repeating… For several years now and especially this season, I hear all the time that Steelers’ QBs just need to “throw the deep ball up and let Chase Claypool (and now George Pickens) go get it. They are big, physical and athletic receivers who are going to win those ’50/50′ balls way more than they’ll lose them. Strangely enough, many of those same folks were the first ones screaming at Kenny Pickett Sunday when he did exactly what those fans have been clamoring for. Pickett’s deep shot to Claypool was both late and too high but it was EXACTLY the type of ball Claypool has to come down with right? He had both of his hands on the ball despite not extending his arms. He allowed a 5’9” defensive back to knock the ball away. At some point, Claypool is going to have make these plays or his days in Pittsburgh are numbered.
