SCB Steelers Hot Reads – It’s as Clear as Mud

Hey Steelers Fans. Welcome to Monday.

The Kickoff

Here’s what we know about the QB job, free agency and the Draft. Allow me to clear my throat… Ahem… NOTHING. It’s not like we really know anything about the latter two but you’d typically like to have your quarterback situation settled by this point. The hope – with the legal tampering period a week away – is that we will have a pretty good idea of who the signal caller will be. But then again, who in the Hell knows? Free agency? I have my suspicions but no real evidence and the Draft? Forget it. I don’t think Omar Khan and company will know until free agency settles out. In other words, things are as clear as mud.

The QB “Latest”

From everything I’ve gathered and learned from the past 48 hours is that between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, they would prefer Fields. This doesn’t mean there aren’t Wilson supporters in the building but when one considers age, price and the ability to move in the pocket, then all signs point toward Fields. With Matthew Stafford no longer an option, not that he ever was, there will be Sam Darnold chatter and Daniel Jones chatter etc. The only way this thing goes really poorly for the Steelers is if Fields and Wilson both sign elsewhere. Then we’ll have a real mess. Well, bigger than we would have anyway.

The Combine Wrap-Up

I’ve got several pieces here for your reading enjoyment related to Combine.

QBs and Running Backs

Wide Receivers

Defensive Backs

My first mock draft will be coming as will our full position previews.

Cam the Man

One of my five off-season predictions immediately after the season ended was that Cam Heyward would retire. Yes, even after an All-Pro season I figured that Heyward would want to go out on top as a player. He would realize just how far away this team was from a Super Bowl run and move on with his life’s work. Not a shocker here, but it appears I’m likely wrong and we are all better for it.

Random Reads

I understand that there’s some down-time during the Combine but listening to Rich Eisen and Daniel Jeremiah was downright painful at times… If I had to guess right now, the Steelers first three picks in late April will be Defensive Lineman, Wide Receiver and Running Back but not necessarily in that order… I say it every year and I realize it also takes a willing participant but I’d be doing everything I could to trade down and acquire picks this year. This roster needs that much help… I didn’t see any of the movies up for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars. This is not any different from most years… If you didn’t see this prescription drug spoof on Saturday Night Live it’s worth your time…
