SCB Steelers Hot Reads – Curiously Quiet

Hey Steelers Fans. Welcome to Wednesday.

The Kickoff

Does anyone else find it curious that we’ve heard very little from the current Steelers’ players regarding Mike Tomlin’s abrupt exit last week? I’m not keeping score or anything but so far I believe Cam Heyward had some comments on his podcast and Adam Thielen the following comments that were released today.

Both Heyward and Thielen were professional and it seems neither was willing to wade into anything that would even be remotely considered “controversial.” I happen to agree with Thielen in that the players didn’t do enough. Clearly they didn’t, but isn’t that also on the coaching staff too? If you look at some of the other teams that have parted ways with coaches, the reactions from players has been largely quiet with maybe the exception of Buffalo where Sean McDermott’s firing has not gone over well. I’m glad things have remained largely quiet. Drama is the last thing the fan base or organization needs right now.

Here’s the latest edition of my short-form podcast “The Inside Blitz.” I discussed the three guys doing in-person interviews this week plus I had some thoughts on former Special Teams Coach Danny Smith as well.

Around the North

Like us, the Baltimore Ravens have yet to name a new head coach. The Cleveland Browns have not named one either but I can tell you who it won’t be. Mike McDaniel pulled his name from consideration before agreeing to terms to become the new OC in Los Angeles for Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers. Can you blame him? The Browns have talent, but their QB situation and their ownership is a mess… The Ravens appear to be highly interested in Anthony Weaver who will interview in Pittsburgh on Friday.

Kind of Sad…

I appreciate the excitement and commitment former players at the “U” have but can anyone explain why Michael Irvin is mic’ed up and allowed to talk to players during games? This isn’t high school. Irvin is not on the roster and he isn’t part of the coaching staff either. And Ray Lewis is the last guy to talk to my QB before he goes out for the most important drive of his career? I find it really sad. These guys need to move on.

Random Reads

Antwaan Randle-El’s name is starting to show up more and more as a potential offensive coordinator candidate. It’s something to keep an eye on as he’s become very respected in coaching circles… There’s little doubt that Kenneth Gainwell will be sought by many teams this Offseason, not just the Steelers. I’m honestly not sure the Steelers will be able to afford him… Pretty interesting dynamic that unfolded in Buffalo. The owner clearly sided with his General Manager. We’ve seen similar battles in Pittsburgh but in that case Bill Cowher won out over Tom Donahoe. Ironically, Donahoe went to Buffalo… Baker Mayfield wasn’t happy about a slight thrown at him from an Atlanta journalist who said Kevin Stefanski didn’t have good QB play. I actually agree with Mayfield. He’s by no means Tom Brady, but he was the best QB option the Browns had in many years and they chose to move on. The journalist should be embarrassed.
