Home Steelers 2015 Season Random Thoughts Following a Tough Steelers’ Win

Random Thoughts Following a Tough Steelers’ Win

by Steeldad

The Steelers accomplished exactly what they set out to do today when they picked up a win at St. Louis by the score of 12-6. In the NFL, you take any victory you can get and yes, even at the cost of players lost to injury.

In this case, I’m not so sure. Ben Roethlisberger went down with an ugly knee injury early in the third quarter and if you want my opinion, yes, Mark Barron should have been flagged. Regardless, that isn’t suddenly going to make Big Ben’s knee immediately better so we all need to get past it.

Here are my thoughts on today’s game…

-After going five for five in the red zone last week the Steelers immediately struggled on their opening drive against the Rams. Ultimately, they would settle for a Josh Scobee field goal but again play-calling and whether Roethlisberger audibled incorrectly are fair talking points.

-Todd Haley again displayed why I get so frustrated with him today by basically putting ankle weights on the offense after it opened on fire (no burning turf pun intended) by going to the run. Haley often makes football much more difficult than it needs to be. My belief is this; until the defense can consistently stop what you’re doing then you keep doing it.

-Antonio Brown is the best wide receiver in the NFL. Lets just leave it at that following his 11 receptions. To further my point above, had Haley not stopped the offense, Brown may have had 20 receptions.

-The offensive line looked much more mortal today and I saw something very disheartening. We all knew the Steelers were facing a very good Rams’ front led by Aaron Donald but some of the packages were very reminiscent of what the Ravens did to them in the playoff loss last year. Kelvin Beachum has been a great story and is a hard worker but he struggles when teams overload his side. It was obvious again today.

-Jordan Todman looked more assertive in his one kick return today than any that Dri Archer has done in his career.

-Sean Spence played well today. He doesn’t have the splash that Ryan Shazier has but I thought he was very effective today with five tackles and one for a loss.

-Let’s be honest; the Steelers were bailed out with a couple of key Rams’ drops and a poor throw on a fake punt that should have worked.

-Le’veon Bell’s athleticism is crazy. Did you see his hurdle today? Well, it isn’t the first time.

Bell Sparty Hurdle

-I’m at a complete loss as to where Brandon Boykin is. I’ve boiled it down to this; he’s too strong at man coverage and Mike Tomlin clearly wants to his DBs to play off. It has to be an issue of use because Boykin is the best cover corner the team has.

-Would you believe through three games the Steelers have given up the fewest points of any AFC North team?

-DeAngelo Williams had one carry for two yards. I didn’t think it would be famine so fast for him.

-One nice thing Michael Vick will have to look forward to is Martavis Bryant coming back in a couple of weeks. They seemed to have a nice relationship during the preseason.

-You can wonder what Ben Roethlisberger was thinking on that interception he threw prior to getting hurt but it wasn’t all on him. Markus Wheaton was clearly not on the same page which resulted in the interception.

-I believe Jarvis Jones is still dealing with problems relating to his wrist injury from last season. I counted at least three missed tackles because he just couldn’t wrap up.

Can some one please explain to me the lack of playing time for Boykin?

It’s the $64,000 question. Let us know if you have any conspiracy theories. Actually, I’ve had several thoughts. You can find them on the site.

Why would you trade a draft pick for someone you aren’t going to play there is film on this man you knew what you were getting makes no sense

Trust me R, most of us here at SCB are asking the same question.

Will Allen is really playing some good football, As far as Boykin goes the Steeler just don’t rotate players. They pick a starting lineup and you will very rarely see a backup enter the game. I think with the right game plan Mike Vick can be Successful, but we are going to see a heavy dose of runs up the middle and loads of screen passes. Like i said in the shout box if Haley is the great O.C. as people are claiming now would be a great time to prove it. My last thought is this, with all that time spent watching landry Jones this preseason we could have been grooming a quality back-up. But didn’t we know that while we were watching him.

Bob, are you saying that they could have groomed Landry into a quality backup, or that they should have signed someone else and groomed said signee rather than wasting reps on Landry while awaiting Gradkowski getting healthy enough to play?
If the latter, I agree completely.

Jones was a tremendous waste of time. And what scares me is that he’s still here.
