Like It or Not, the Steelers’ Success Depends on Rodgers

I’ve seen fans burn their jerseys and if I’ve seen one social media rant I’ve seen them all. There’s a large number of Pittsburgh Steelers’ fans who aren’t thrilled that Aaron Rodgers is their quarterback. At some point however, we all need to accept the fact he’s here and he isn’t going anywhere until the end of the season.

Steelers’ Head Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed as much today. He was asked if he saw a quarterback controversy ahead he quickly replied “I don’t.” Despite not needing to, I’ll paraphrase, Rodgers is the starter and that’s that. Therefore, it’s time to just accept the fact that Rodgers is the guy who will be under center – barring injury – week one in New York.

I’m not saying this is easy. I haven’t been a fan of this signing since it became a possibility months ago but here we are. I cheer for the logo and not for the player. This doesn’t mean I don’t have favorites because I do, but I’ve learned to put my team fandom ahead of any individual glory and accolades. I figure this is something that comes with age and maturity but then again, maybe not.

Look at it this way; in order for my team to be successful, I have to rely on a guy I’m not a huge fan of to do well. It’s not in my DNA to wish bad things upon any player who suits up for my team. His poor play affects the team and when the team isn’t winning and isn’t successful then that affects me. Maybe less now than it did 20 years ago but I hate losing and I’m guessing you do as well.

So no matter how much drama Aaron Rodgers may bring. No matter how many mistakes he may make, he’s still the guy that we have to depend on to win games. I suppose if he ends up being so awful that Tomlin has to go to someone else then by all means, let Rodgers have it. Until that point however, he’s got my support.
