Hey Steelers fans. Welcome to Tuesday.

The Kickoff

The rookie mini-camp is in the books and that means we can officially start the hype train! Well, some surely will but the majority of us will take things in stride and recognize that this was largely ‘football in pajamas.’ What stood out was Kaleb Johnson’s presence and his words. He knows he needs to improve on his pass protection skills but also has high hopes. He told reporters that he would like to match Najee Harris who went over a thousand years in his first four seasons. I brought up undrafted free agent tight end J.J. Galbreath on our short form podcast a week or two ago. He didn’t get an invite to the Combine but at his Pro Day, his numbers would have easily had him in the upper tier of tight end prospects. He’s not known for his blocking by any stretch but he has the capability to line up all over the formation. He is exactly the type of guy I’ve been wanting to see the Steelers use for years.  The tight end room is already crowded so his chances aren’t great but I’d love to see him give it a great shot.

The Clock

The Steelers and the City of Pittsburgh unveiled their “Countdown Clock” which looks ahead to the Draft next year. Earlier in the day city officials suggested that over one million people could attend. I have no idea where all these people are going to stay.

Leaks A Plenty…

The NFL schedule is set to be released tomorrow but as usual there are already games being leaked. Overnight we learned that the Steelers will “host” the Minnesota Vikings from Croke Park in Dublin while the season will kickoff in its’ usual Thursday night slot with the Eagles hosting the Dallas Cowboys. The Vikings not only play in Dublin in week four but they play the Browns in London during week five.

Random Reads

Why is it even a question about Derek Carr going to the Hall of Fame? He had a nice career, as many other players have had but if he gets into the Hall then we will have finally achieved the ‘Hall of Mediocre’… With the Steelers signing Trey Sermon, how does Cordarrelle Patterson still have a spot on this roster… Yahya Black is a really big man. He’s bigger than any of the other rookies by a long ways and his arm length is impressive too… Does anyone else remember when morning shows like ‘Today’ or ‘Good Morning America’ actually provided news? Seems to me it’s much more about pop culture and “deals and steals” now… If the English Premier League or La Liga start playing regular season games in the USA, then I’ll stop bitching about NFL regular season games in Europe… If and when Aaron Rodgers signs with the Steelers, it will be as anti-climactic as any signing in recent memory…
