Words matter.
Unless you’re an NFL General Manager.
A week after Pittsburgh Steelers GM Omar Khan said he had “full faith” in quarterback Kenny Pickett, the team had soon-to-be free agent Russell Wilson in town into the dark last evening. Allow me to be blunt; you don’t have another quarterback visit if you have “full faith” in the one you have.
Khan has been quoted as saying he isn’t necessarily ‘aggressive,’ he just wants to win Super Bowls. In other words, he knows the Black and Gold aren’t winning one with Pickett and they might not win one with Wilson in 2024. But… Any average fan who understands the game will acknowledge they’re a heck of a lot closer to one with Wilson. You’ve probably seen the stats before but here they are again.
Khan and the Steelers know that they have competition for Wilson. He was in New York, errrrrrr, New Jersey to meet with the Giants prior to coming to Pittsburgh so this won’t be a slam dunk. Wilson likely wants to go somewhere he can win and have a shot at another Super Bowl. Of the teams likely to be in the running for his services the Steelers would rank fairly high in that regard.
Do I understand that Kenny Pickett had to deal with Matt Canada? I do and there’s part of me that does think he deserves a chance under Arthur Smith but I can’t ignore that Wilson is an immediate upgrade. And at the end of the day, Khan’s job is to make his team better. If Wilson chooses to sign here then Khan will have done that.
And we can analyze his words from there.
