SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Wild Cards” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

You already have a pretty good idea of the big names that the Pittsburgh Steelers may draft in the opening round of tomorrow night’s NFL Draft – Malik Willis, Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ridder, Jordan Davis – to name a few. But Kevin Colbert has surprised us before. Artie Burns and Terrell Edmunds are the two bigger surprises in recent years. So who could be those “wild card” type guys for the Steelers tomorrow night? LB Nakobe Dean could be one. He’s the highly respected star from Georgia who is slipping down draft boards likely because of his smallish size. The guy can flat out play though. Two corners that have been getting some first round buzz lately are Andrew Booth of Clemson and Kaiir Elam of Florida. Despite re-signing Terrell Edmunds this week, strong safety remains a need. Keep an eye on Lewis Cine of Georgia. When you rank dead last against the run, big men in the middle are an option. Travis Jones of UConn who is a true 0-Tech type of guy or Devonte Wyatt of Georgia could be the selections. And one other guy who could hear his name called at 20 could be Ole Miss QB Matt Corral. Colbert and Mike Tomlin both like highly competitive guys who’ve been on big stages so don’t forget about him either.

Tweet of the Day… I agree with this but but I also accept one important fact. The NFL is QB driven today. If you take a shot on one and miss, you try again. But if you don’t take one and he goes on to great things? That’s far worse.

Tuitt Update

Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert gave very little information when asked Monday about Stephon Tuitt. From what I’ve been able to gather, he is working towards playing in 2022 and has been more present than he had been in terms of being at the facility. I suspect there will be a lot of opinions given if the Steelers select a defensive lineman in the first round tomorrow night. Some will see this as them just bulking up there because of the age and overall need. But some will surmise that the selection is because Tuitt isn’t returning. I’d bet money on this being the case if they indeed go “DL” in round one.

Keep An Eye On…

If the Steelers have indeed pulled the wool over our eyes and don’t take a QB early on in this Draft then look for one in the middle rounds. Kaleb Eleby of Western Michigan is a very accurate passer and has very good mobility. Bailey Zappe, the QB from Western Kentucky is also a guy to watch. The other thing to look for is a trade back into the first round. If they don’t get their man at 20, could they possibly trade back into the late first round for one of those QBs who are still on the board?
