Good Wednesday to you Steelers’ Fans.
Pittsburgh Steelers’ Head Coach Mike Tomlin could not make any guarantees about whether starting safety Sean Davis would be able to play on Sunday night. If Davis cannot go, then Kam Kelly will get the start. Consider that Kelly not that long ago was playing safety for the San Diego Fleet of the now defunct AAF. This is in no way to suggest that Kelly can’t perform well enough to help beat Tom Brady and the Pats but I’m a realist too. To think that Brady and Josh McDaniels wouldn’t cook up something would be wrong. I have every confidence the Steelers have time to prepare for the absence of Davis but how confident I am I honestly can’t say.
Tight Ends are Set for Now
As of this writing the Steelers have done nothing to upgrade their tight end depth. We feared this was going to be the case and it looks like it’s reality. This doesn’t mean they won’t address it as the season goes on but I really think this a major failure on the part of Kevin Colbert. What I hope happens is that Xavier Grimble suddenly turns the corner and becomes the number two tight end. Nobody likes being wrong but I’ll gladly take it in this situation. The fact that they haven’t even added a veteran on a small contract is strange to me.

Looking Ahead to the Pats
Obviously I’ll have more specific thoughts on how the Steelers can beat New England in our “Three-Point Stance” but I suspect the Pats will do as they always do in the Bill Belichick Era. Defensively they’ll take away JuJu Smith-Schuster and force Ben Roethlisberger to utilize his other options. Offensively, I suspect the Pats will attempt to run the ball more than they typically do. They’ve got really good backs who will catch lots of short passes too. The defense will have to be patient. Getting a lead on them would be a huge advantage.
Would You Believe?
In the four previous games in New England in the Ben Roethlisberger Era, the Pats have actually turned the ball over more than the Steelers. The Pats have six turnovers versus the Steelers’ five. However… Five of those six Pats’ miscues came in the 2008 loss to Pittsburgh with Matt Cassel at QB. Stats often tell a lot of the story but sometimes you have to go even further.
