It would be just my luck to write this piece only to have Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Omar Khan pull off some kind of blockbuster trade. Short of that however, it sure feels as if the team has little if any plans for the quarterback position and it has to be affecting one other important area.
Ask yourself, if you were a free agent looking for a place to play in 2025, why would you come to Pittsburgh? Perhaps the better question is, if you were a wide receiver why would you come to Pittsburgh?
With little to no certainty surrounding the QB spot, potential free agents have to be asking themselves this very question. Let’s say the Steelers do bring Justin Fields back. Is that enough to make a top wide receiver want to come here? If they bring Russell Wilson back, does anyone really think that free agents will be clamoring to be a Steeler?
With both of those guys still in doubt, let’s look at the other options. You think Daniel Jones, Gardner Minshew or potentially Derek Carr is going to ‘rattle some cages?’ I don’t think so.
Therefore, does it really matter? In other words, does it matter who the quarterback is for 2025? Isn’t this version of the Steelers pretty well established as a team in flux? So many fans seem to think this team is a “quarterback away” from success and you know what? Maybe they are? I’ve seen stranger things happen in the National Football League.
But I’ve also been around a long time too. I know what I need to see in order for postseason success to occur. At this point, in order for it to happen in 2025, rookies and younger players are going to have to step up and we don’t even know who they are yet.
This is what happens however when you don’t have a quarterback in the NFL.
