SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Tailgating” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

I wanted to take a moment to talk about the opportunity I had this past Sunday prior to the Steelers game versus Tennessee. For some time now, Rick Holman the Steelers Fan Hall of Famer, has been a frequent guest on our podcast. Sunday was the first time we got to meet in person. We met at one of his usual pregame hangouts, the “Renegade Tailgate.” Many fans take their tailgates seriously and don’t just welcome anyone in but my daughter and I were welcomed like family. I cannot thank Lenny and his wife Cindy enough along with Whitney. They had a terrific spread of food – from pierogis and meatballs to deli sandwiches and desserts – all of which were fantastic. And if you like alcohol there were more options than your favorite hangout! The preparation time for this every home Sunday must be literally counted in days. They had a raffle going along with a TV from the back of their van. Sure, I’ve attended bigger tailgates, but none so personal and welcoming as this one. I highly suggest you stop by. You may also run into a few famous folks along the way too.

Injury Issues

This make come as a shock to you but Chris Wormley has a groin. I think we all have groins but when Mike Tomlin says a guy has a “groin” it means he has injured it. This is something to keep an eye this week going forward. Pat Freiermuth suffered his second concussion of the season and is currently in protocol. I’m not going to make any proclamations here because we are dealing with a rookie player who is trending in a very scary direction right now.

Tweet of the Day… If you don’t know, this means Chas is going to take a nap under his desk at work. We support this message.

Covid Chiefs

Star players Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill are both on the Covid-19 list as are as many as 11 other players for the Kansas City Chiefs. If it looks like these two are question marks for Sunday I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if this game is moved. The NFL does not want it’s marquee, late Sunday window game to be without two big draws. If Patrick Mahomes joins this list? I guarantee this game is moved especially with the Steelers playing on Monday in Week 17.

Clock Management

I have said for a long time that Mike Tomlin is a good football coach. One of the things that will never allow me to add “great” is his penchant for horrendous clock management. Sunday was yet another example as the Titans had the ball deep in our territory as the clock wound down before halftime. The opportunity was there to use timeouts and get the ball back with almost a minute to go. Tomlin instead waited for the end to use the timeout and it cost the Steelers an opportunity to get closer for a Chris Boswell field goal attempt. This issue will always be his Achilles’ heel.
