SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Samuels to the Rescue” Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers’ fans!

As we all know, this has been a very trying season for the Steelers on the injury front. From Ben Roethlisberger and Stephon Tuitt being lost for the season to Mason Rudolph and Vance McDonald being dinged up enough to miss games it’s been anything but a joy ride. Now we can add running backs James Conner and Benny Snell to the list. As of right now Conner’s AC Joint injury is going to likely make him a game-time decision and Snell’s status is still unknown at the time of this writing. He’s dealing with a knee problem that forced him out of action Monday night. The good news here is that Jaylen Samuels is ready to go. Mike Tomlin confirmed what I told you on Monday in that Samuels could have played against Miami but they chose one more week of rest. That may have been most fortuitous as Samuels may require an extremely heavy workload against a very solid Colts’ defense. While I also expect to see Trey Edmunds (assuming both Conner and Snell are out) I think the bulk of the load will be on the back of Samuels. He’s proven before he can handle it but this time he’s coming back from a month off.

The Podcast

We’ll be recording the show tonight and will have plenty of opinions and analysis on the Steelers’ win over Miami. We will look ahead to the Colts too and I’m sure have some laughs along the way. Our podcast is presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh!

Congrats James Conner!

He has been named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Dolphins. Well deserved!

Tweet of the Day… You weren’t wrong Chris Hoke.

The Thing About Bell….

For all the talk about Le’Veon Bell not playing well being about his bad offensive line or his poor QB play I really believe it also has to do with the fact that he’s worn down. The toll taken by him in Pittsburgh has a lot to do with that too. It’s another reason why running backs are not what they used to be and why they’ve become a dime a dozen so to speak. Bell provided the Steelers with many great moments but I’m glad they didn’t entertain thoughts of bringing him back. His immaturity was not needed.

An Ode to Cam

If Cam Heyward plays the rest of the season like he did on Monday night then I like this team’s chances to make the postseason. With Stephon Tuitt lost for the season the pressure is immense on Heyward and granted, it was just Miami, but he played really well. He’ll need help from Javon Hargrave, Tyson Alualu and company but man… Heyward was a stud and that needs to continue.
