SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘QB Stans’ Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

I don’t know about you but I’m a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Even when they lose, I’m still a fan. I have my favorite players going back to the Blonde Bomber and Mean Joe but you know what? Whether or not those guys played well meant little to me. Ben Roethlisberger had a brutal statistical game in Super Bowl XL but the STEELERS WON and that’s what mattered to me. Some of these fans, or as the kids call them “stans,” need to wake the hell up. We get it; you’re super excited that your favorite player Kenny Pickett or Mason Rudolph is the QB but are their stats more important to you than winning? Social media as we know is largely a cesspool but there are times when it can actually be positive and informative. When it comes to opinions on the quarterbacks of the Pittsburgh Steelers social media becomes the worst. The unfortunate part about it is that it accomplishes nothing. Even when presented with 100% factual information that is indisputable, the respective QB fans still keep coming. Look, it’s OK to have your favorite players but if you value what they do more than the team they play for winning or losing then it’s a lost cause.

Football on a Wednesday?

The Christmas Eve and Christmas Day games in the National Football League drew more, huge numbers this year which begs the question for 2024. With Christmas falling on a Wednesday next year, will the NFL just pass on playing these games? Don’t bet on it. Those viewership numbers (30 million for LVR vs KC) will not be ignored. If the NFL found a way to get the Steelers to play on a Wednesday during Covid then I have no doubt that the NFL will find a way to play games on a Christmas Wednesday.

Steelers History

This week in Steelers History, Gordon re-visits a Steelers trip out West. With the current iteration of the Steelers heading to Seattle this weekend, he looked back to the 1980’s when the remnants of the great Dynasty teams played the Seahawks in the famed Kingdome.

Run. The. Ball.

In the last five weeks, Seattle is giving up over five yards per carry. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren shouldn’t get tons of carries. The Seahawks are in the same position the Steelers are as both are 8-7 and fighting for a postseason berth. Their home crowd will be fired up and louder than ever. The best way to take them out of the game is to run the ball efficiently. Do that and get some more turnovers on defense and the Steelers will have a great shot in this one.

Around the AFC

We’ve been saying it for weeks; the Steelers were not going to catch the Baltimore Ravens in the race for the AFC North title. After the Christmas night thrashing of the 49ers, the Ravens have proven us correct. I do not believe the Ravens are a perfect product by any means but right now, they’re the best team in the AFC… The team that used to be the best team in football, the Kansas City Chiefs, are anything but. Their defense is as good as it has ever been under Andy Reid, but the offense is mis-firing like crazy. It’s not only the receivers either. Patrick Mahomes isn’t playing well either. Have to wonder if all of the commercials and post Super Bowl attention hasn’t finally gotten to Mahomes and company… I hate the Browns but kudos to them. They took a 40-year old QB off the street and have themselves ready for the postseason and with that defense, they will be a difficult ‘out’ for any opponent… Bills vs Dolphins for the AFC East title in Week 19 is looking like a real possibility right now.
