SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Giving Some Credit” Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers’ Fans.

A professional football general manager is often among the most hated people from any fan base. But there are times when that person deserves some accolades. Kevin Colbert went out and signed cornerback Steven Nelson who many thought was getting way too much money. Several Chiefs’ fans I spoke with said “good luck” about as sarcastically as possible yet Nelson has been terrific on the corner opposite Joe Haden. Colbert also made the very ‘un-steeler-like’ decision to trade a first round pick for Minkah Fitzpatrick. I’m never crazy about trading first rounders but this trade made sense and it has now made even more since he arrived. Remember when we used to scream in horror about all the blown coverages and inability to create turnovers in regards to this secondary? Surely mistakes will happen but overall, Colbert deserves high marks for both of these moves.

The Podcast is Up!

We recorded the 154th episode of the Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh last night. We touched on a number of topics including Mason Rudolph, the defense and the growth of the leadership plus a whole lot more. You can listen right here and please consider taking a moment to leave us a review!

Tweet of the Day… Seems fitting.

The Mayfield Mess

I’m guessing you’ve seen the footage of Baker Mayfield’s testy interview yesterday and subsequent ‘storming off.’ This was followed 17 minutes later by him tweeting his feelings which I guess is what the younger generation now does to get their feelings heard. The journalist, who is known in Cleveland to be quite the instigator, asked a valid question and Mayfield clearly didn’t like it. It would be really easy to pile on Mayfield here and the reason is due to his lack of maturity. He needs to control the message as he’s the only one giving the answer. Things have not gone well for the Browns and I’m certainly not upset by that but this is only going to get worse if he can’t grow up a bit.

Is This Bud for Us?

As his play has picked up in 2019, questions about whether Bud Dupree will be back in the Black and Gold next season have increased. There’s no doubting he is playing much better than he ever has in Pittsburgh but I can’t help but wonder if this is him turning a corner or him playing ‘balls out’ knowing a new contract is coming from someone. That’s my fear here. Dupree wouldn’t be the first guy to suddenly up his performance, get paid and then revert back to average performances.
