SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Fantasy Focus” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers’ fans.

As we continue to deal with this period of pure dread and almost zero football, my attention today turns to ‘Fantasy Football.’ While I casually play fantasy football I’m really not all that crazy about it. The reason is simple; it has completely changed the game. I do believe that making the game safer was going to happen one way or the other but what I never dreamed was that the impact of it would change the game so much. So what has changed you ask? Well, let’s take all of the “illegal hits” and overly aggressive play out of this. What the NFL ‘powers that be’ have realized is that fantasy football equals money. Lots of money in fact. As you know, football like this is dominated by offensive numbers and players. There are some leagues that incorporate defensive players but typically their numbers never equal and certainly never rise above their offensive counterparts. So therefore should we be surprised that offensive stats have reached epic proportions? No we should not. Officiating and officiating changes have almost exclusively favored offensive football in recent years. Why wouldn’t they? Fantasy football players need offense. They need their players to produce. They go to bars and taverns to watch games, they buy endless amounts of preseason magazines, subscription only services and rent out places to hold drafts. All of that is about money and the NFL knows it. If the game suddenly returned to defensive football then what happens to Fantasy Football? People stop playing and that means people stop spending money. Conspiracy theory? Hardly. It all makes sense when you think about it. It’s actually what makes our Steelers’ D so special. They are unique and they are rare in this current version of NFL Football. I’m not anti-fantasy by any stretch but to suggest it doesn’t impact the game today would mean you haven’t been paying attention.

We’re sorry to hear our friends at 26 Shirts are suspending their Pittsburgh operations. They sponsored our podcast for a number of years and were great to work with. They are having a close-out sale on all their remaining in-stock items, which you can check out here.

Tweet of the Day… Ellie was a bit happy to see this on Twitter!

Steelers Fantasy

The outlook for Steelers’ players in the fantasy world is not unlike the outlook for them as a whole. If you’re planning to choose members of the Black and Gold for your team then you’re putting your faith in the elbow of Ben Roethlisberger. To make it as plain as I can, if Big Ben is healthy and plays most of the season then backs and receivers should flourish. If he isn’t healthy and doesn’t play much, then your team is toast.

If you would like to get hooked on fantasy football, try my league. It uses 2 defensive players. Email me and I will send you an invitation.
