SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Double Dip’ Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

The term ‘double dip’ applies to many things. Some refer to a baseball doubleheader as a ‘double dip.’ Some may refer it to as two people swimming. And of course, there’s the most famous double dip of all-time featuring one Mr. George Costanza… In the case of today, I’m using ‘Double Dip’ to refer to what I believe the Pittsburgh Steelers should do in the upcoming NFL Draft. As things currently stand, I am a huge fan of the Steelers taking TWO cornerbacks. Right now, the roster consists of Levi Wallace, James Pierre, Arthur Maulet and 33-year old Patrick Peterson and a few others. The bottom line is that this position must get younger and it must get faster. The idea of double dipping comes with some problems. While the Steelers have one first round pick, two in the second and one each in the third and fourth, they are lacking picks in the fifth and sixth. This is usually a prime landing area for a second corner to be taken, especially in such a deep class. With two selections in the seventh, it would seem highly likely that’s where they take a second CB if it’s going to happen but… Don’t dismiss them taking two within those first five picks. That’s how desperate they should be for help at the position. What Mike Tomlin, Omar Khan and I think is very different and my vote doesn’t count but that’s where I find myself with less than a month to go before the Draft.

Tweet of the Day… Same here! This beauty has been on my wall for decades!

Finding the EDGE…

I’m becoming more and more convinced that the Steelers will draft an EDGE rusher at some point in this draft. Two reasons why… First, they zero, reliable depth at the position. Second, we don’t know what the situation is with Alex Highsmith who clearly deserves an extension heading into his final year. The problem there is that it will take both sides to come to an agreement and that’s easier said than done. Regardless of those two points, I see an outside linebacker being selected.

One or the Other?

So if I said to you, “which position will the Steelers draft and which one will they NOT draft between LB and DL?” what would you say? To preface, they have added two starting LBs in Elandon Roberts and Nate Holcomb while they’ve also re-signed Larry Ogunjobi and have brought in Breiden Fehoko. I’m of the belief that they are much more likely to draft a defensive lineman than they are a LB. I’m not saying they won’t draft both but gun to my head? I’m saying DL.

Prospect Profiles

We’ve started our NFL Draft Coverage here at SCB and the first of our Position Profiles is out. We’ve made the decision that rather than make extensive profiles of each player, we are doing smaller ones and grouping them by position. This allows us to easier update information as Pro Days and the Combine provide more info.
