SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Day One Rant’ Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

I’m just getting this rant out of the way now because I know it’s coming either way… One of the things you learn quickly when you enter the world of “Blogging the Steelers” is that it’s all about clicks. If a player passes gas, then apparently that’s worth a 165-word article. Sorry, that’s not how we do things here. But even worse than that is when Camp starts and a player does something that creates a greater level of hyperbole than is remotely necessary. Take for instance a throw from Kenny Pickett during 11 on 11. Keep in mind the Steelers were wearing pajamas yesterday. That means no pads for those not following along… Pickett drops back and delivers a nice throw down the sideline which is caught just beyond a leaping DB. Fans quickly posted video of this to social media. “Look at that throw! Kenny dropping dimes! Mid-season form already!!” For the love of god… Watch the offensive linemen on the play. They turn and watch the play for crying out loud. The players are going about 70% too. The real story here would have been if Pickett had missed the throw. With no pass rush and players not going full speed? THAT would have been the story. Look, I get it… Many are excited to have the Steelers back, I’m one of them, but not every single play is worthy of an article or a tweet. Understand the context of the situation first. The constant hyperbole and fawning is fine if you’re just a fan but how are you going to be taken seriously as a person who “writes and analyzes the game” when this is what you’re focusing on? (Takes a breath) OK I’m done.

The Podcast

Episode 327 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc of South Florida is available for your listening and/or viewing pleasure! We discussed some of the key Camp battles, celebrated the opening of Camp and much, much more. The show airs live from the Bradshaw Bourbon Studio!

Tweet of the Day…  If you listen to the podcast then you know we get a weekly visit from the late Casey Kasem and it’s highly worth your time!

Reading Into the Depth Chart

Here’s a news item for you… Mike Tomlin hates depth charts. If you heard Ryan Scarpino on the podcast last night then you’ll know Tomlin would routinely ask Ryan to do the depth chart himself and then show it to him before being published. In other words, if Mike Tomlin doesn’t care much about the depth chart then you shouldn’t either. Take for instance that Minkah Fitzpatrick wasn’t part of the ‘starting 11’ yesterday. Does anyone really believe he won’t be the starter in week one? Exactly. So please, don’t look into this much at all.

Our “Writing Tree”

So you know how coaches who have success often have a “coaching tree?” This is where their assistants often go on to their own head coaching gigs. We here at SCB have our own kind of tree if you will and I’m very proud of that. Some of you know Derrick Bell who does terrific Steelers analysis for SI.com and many of you know Nick Farabaugh who is over at SteelersNow.com. And then there’s Zack Smith too who has a podcast and is very involved with the Steelers as well. Nick was just named a full-time Steelers beat writer for SteelersNow so congrats to him and everyone who hung out here for a bit.

Camp Tidbits

Joe Burrow left on a cart yesterday with what’s being a called a calf strain. First off, players routinely take carts now as a safety precaution so don’t read too much into it. And if you’re finding yourself celebrating Burrow’s injury, then you need help man. Don’t be like that… The Steelers were very healthy after yesterday with just tight end Rodney Williams struggling with the heat. Let’s hope that continues. .. The Steelers return to the fields of St. Vincent today at 1:55pm for another padless practice.
