SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Curious Move’ Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

Yesterday the Pittsburgh Steelers released outside linebacker Jamir Jones. I and many others found this to be a very curious move. Jones’ current contract did not even count against the salary cap meaning his release costs the Steelers absolutely nothing. Many have speculated that this was done to make room for Bud Dupree to return to the team but this move didn’t need to happen in order for that to occur. Signing Dupree wouldn’t have required anyone to be let go. So what are we left with here? Was Jones perhaps in poor health, meaning, has he recently suffered an injury? Did he ask for his release thinking his prospects would be better elsewhere (keep in mind that Mike Tomlin likes volunteers, not hostages)? Was this move in reaction to something Jones did? A disciplinary issue perhaps? Normally I wouldn’t spend a lot of time on a guy this far down the pecking order but it’s an odd move period. Jones would have been, at worst, the team’s fourth OLB. This is also a guy who played on 57% of the team’s Special Teams snaps last year too. Whatever the reason, it’s curious to say the least.

A New Member of the Team

Earlier this week I told you that Ryan Scarpino welcomed his first child to the world this past weekend. Today I’m happy to inform you that we’ve added a new contributor to the SCB Team! I’d like to introduce Ian to you and the rest of the audience. Yes, this makes two Ian’s now so I’m going to need nicknames for these guys. A life long Steelers’ fan, Ian is going specialize in player evaluation, especially in regards to the Draft and in-game performance. You should start seeing his material soon!

Tweet of the Day… John Candy was a freaking treasure. I wish he was respected more for his acting and overall humor.

The Podcast

Tonight on the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc of South Florida we’ll be heavily focused on the offensive side of the ball as the NFL Draft draws closer. We’ll take a look at each position, who we like and don’t like and more importantly, who the Steelers seem to like. All that and much more!

Could Alualu be Returning?

When the 2022 season ended, it seemed a foregone conclusion that Steelers’ defensive lineman Tyson Alualu would be retiring. In 2021, he missed most of the season with a broken ankle and then early in 2022 he was demoted and received less playing time. Therefore it just seemed like Father Time had come for the former first round pick as he comes for us all but… As of right now there has been no word on his status. Perhaps he’s thinking of returning? The Steelers have brought back Larry Ogunjobi and signed Breiden Fehoko and Armon Watts to bolster the D-Line so is Alualu even necessary any longer? Keep in mind he could have already told the Steelers of his plans and they are just waiting to make it a formally for salary cap purposes. Either way, I’m a bit surprised we haven’t heard more?

Prospect Profiles

We’ve started our NFL Draft Coverage here at SCB and the first of our Position Profiles is out. We’ve made the decision that rather than make extensive profiles of each player, we are doing smaller ones and grouping them by position. This allows us to easier update information as Pro Days and the Combine provide more info.
