SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Capital Cleansing’ Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

I never and I mean NEVER, take it for granted that I’m a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. For 40 years, the franchise went without a postseason victory and fortunately for me, the team became the Steelers we all know early in my youth. I’ve never looked back. I say I never take this team for granted because I see what other fan bases have gone through. Take for instance the Washington Redskins, errrr, Washington Football Team, errrr, Washington Commanders. This was once an incredibly proud franchise that won three Super Bowls before Daniel Snyder bought the team 27 years ago. During those 27 years, the team has literally floundered in scandal and often times obscurity. Their homefield has had problems that included a waste water line breaking during a game over the fans. There seemed nothing more symbolic than that during Snyder’s tenure. The NFL is a better product when the traditional teams are relevant. I don’t mean to ‘throw shade’ at the newer teams in pro football, but I think most fans would agree. Therefore, I’m hopeful Washington once again becomes respectable. And don’t be surprised if there’s another name change coming too. Josh Harris, the new owner, is a lifelong fan and is not crazy about what has transpired the last three decades. He clearly has the support of fans too.

Tweet of the Day… Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.

The D-Line

As I was working on the Training Camp Previews this week and more notably the Defensive Line, I was reminded just what a dogfight this is going to be to make the roster. Cam Heyward, Larry Ogunjobi, DeMarvin Leal and rookie Keeanu Benton are locks right? That leaves two or three spots max for the remaining guys. Armon Watts, Breiden Fehoko, Isaiahh Loudermilk and Montravius Adams are all going to be vying for those spots. Injuries will no doubt play a part but I don’t expect to see much of Heyward or Ogunjobi in the preseason at all. The team already knows what they’re capable of so no use getting them injured. What I’m getting at is that there are going to be a couple of decent guys who don’t make this roster.

Pickett and Expectations

Scarps made a great point last night on the podcast. There seem to be a lot of fans who believe that Kenny Pickett is suddenly going to go from seven touchdown passes to 30. The point Ryan made was that fans need to realize that Pickett is still developing. He didn’t get many first team reps in his rookie Camp and didn’t play a full season either. So while I’d really like to be wrong about him getting 30 TD passes, the reality is we need to slow down a bit. In other words, let’s slow our roll a bit.
