There is nothing that trumps talent when it comes to athletics. From our earliest youth sports to professional sports at the highest levels, when you’re talented, passes are given. We all know people like this. The high school star who is constantly in trouble somehow is always available on game days is a scenario we’ve all seen. What is happening with Brendan Sorsby feels very similar doesn’t it? What I feel very confident in telling you is that any interest the Pittsburgh Steelers had in the troubled QB (which was very little from what I’m told) is long gone.
Yesterday in Texas, a judge’s decision has opened the door for Sorsby to play for Texas Tech this coming season. Despite the fact that gambling on one’s own team has always been a death knell, apparently this judge didn’t see it that way. The reactions from across the college football landscape have been swift. Nebraska’s Athletic Director was the first in line when he issued a memo to his coaches stating that no one may schedule Texas Tech until further notice.
Then last night the Big Ten – which Nebraska belongs too – also suggested that its’ teams would not participate against the Red Raiders in any sport. For the record, Sorsby will miss the first two games due to an agreed to suspension as a result of the gambling. Texas Tech will open with Abilene Christian and Oregon State by the way. You and I could play QB and win these games for Tech.
The decision by the Texas judge ultimately means that Sorsby won’t be in the NFL’s Supplemental Draft and again, the Steelers weren’t interested anyway. No one is suggesting the talented young man can’t get the help he needs for his gambling addiction. But this once again proves my opening point. The fact that Sorsby is an incredibly talented athlete is opening doors most others would never have. He shouldn’t be anywhere near the Texas Tech football team let alone the game in general right now. Perhaps in the end he could go on to have a very nice NFL career but I don’t believe it will be in Pittsburgh.
