If you haven’t been paying attention to football outside of Pittsburgh, then perhaps you’ve missed that Seattle All-Pro Safety Kam Chancellor is holding out in hopes of getting a new contract.
His current deal still has this year, plus two more left before he’d become a free agent in 2018. The Steelers of course are in a position where they could desperately use the services of Chancellor.
Before I go any further, I’m not saying the Steelers should make a deal for Chancellor. I’m simply making the point that it can’t hurt to at least make a phone call can it? If what they are demanding is way more than you are willing to give then you say “thanks” and you move on.
But what if the Seahawks’ demands aren’t so out of this world? If you are Kevin Colbert, are you willing to ship out Mike Mitchell and a draft pick? Are you willing to send a first rounder for him?
As I said last week, Will Allen is a steady, veteran player but can he do what you need him to for 16 games? Then there’s Mike Mitchell who is to me, a ticking time bomb. You just don’t know when he’s going to get beat in coverage or miss a key tackle. The addition of Chancellor though would provide something else this unit is sorely missing and that’s some attitude.
The defense could use an attitude adjustment and I’m sure Keith Butler would welcome his physicality to this side of the ball.
If I’m the Steelers, I’m making the call sooner rather than later too. Seattle gave up 34 points today in St. Louis and now heads to Green Bay for a Sunday Night Game. The Seahawks could very well be 0-2 and struggling on defense making Chancellor’s holdout all the more intriguing.
Pick up the phone Kevin, it’s worth a dime isn’t it?
Seattle has already stated that Chancellor will not be available for trade.
True but I’ve heard that before only to see a guy get shipped out.
It doesn’t matter teams have said that before so don’t take it to heart. Yeah they could be serious but i will believe it when it happens. If the value is good they may not be able to pass it up. The Pittsburgh Steelers have the means to put such a deal together without loosing any one currently on their roster by offering draft picks which could interest the Seahawks more than player offering. The Steelers i believe won’t be willing to offer anyone but draft picks unless maybe Shamarko Thomas or Will Allen in the deal.
Don’t be surprised if Mike Mitchell were part of the deal… Just sayin.
That type of deal would be way worth it to help rebuild the Steeler defense. The Steelers offer free safety Mike Mitchell and a 1st round pick for Kam Chancellor would be ideal for the Steelers. Yeah they loose a 2016 1st round pick, but at least they are getting a young proven safety in return. Drafting a guy for defense with their luck lately it may not even work out in the end. At least Chancellor is a proven player and like i said loosing a first rounder is well worth it for a guy like Chancellor.
It would be very intriguing Sean. I think I’d be happier with a second instead of a first though. ?
i’d give a first round pick. With the exception of a couple hits colberts lost his touch in the draft. But thats the problem. colbert doesn’t have the where-with-all for the season changing “blockbuster” trade..he’s just a north side clickster.
I don’t think I’d give up a 1st just because 1st round picks are talented AND cheap players to add to your team. And honestly I don’t think he’d cost that much.
Guys like Chancellor are hard to move because of the money. That to me is the sticking point more than what he’d cost in draft picks, because I think Seattle may accept something as low as a 3rd rounder for him. Moving Mitchell and a 3rd would be a dream scenario, because you’d be dumping his salary in the process. I don’t see that happening, but who knows. Mitchell played well in a talented defense in CAR so maybe SEA could see the same.
If the Steelers are serious about cover 2 then they should consider it, even if that means losing someone like Beachum. Safety play is extremely important to that scheme.
I would not even call at all. Look there is no doubt Kam is damn good but is he really that good or is just a product of there system? 2nd even if you got him it would mean 1 more guy who has big deal and how could the Steelers manage that if they give AB a new contract this offseason or for that matter 1 of there FA’s? Besides knowing how Seattle operates there isn’t a chance he gets dealt. If he does get dealt I’ll be shocked and if by some stroke of a miracle the Steelers get him, I’ll come on this site and admit I was wrong but that ain’t happening.
