SCB Steelers Hot Reads – He Said What?

Hey Steelers Fans. Welcome to Monday.

The Kickoff

With the NFL Draft in the Steel City a thing of the past, Pittsburgh Steelers’ Chairman Art Rooney II was so pleased with the execution of it that he had another suggestion. ARII proposed that the city could host the Super Bowl in the future. In all fairness, if the owners keep adding games to the schedule then it might be possible as it would be warm enough to do it by late April… All jokes aside I’m not sure what he’s getting at. The Super Bowl has always been played in one of the following locations. A city with a domed stadium or a city with a mild to warm climate. The only exception was Super Bowl 48 which was played in MetLife Stadium. Although the NFL got lucky with a game time temperature of 48 degrees, the very next day brought a massive snowstorm to the area. In other words the league gambled and won. I cannot see them rolling the dice with another cold weather site. And I definitely can’t see them doing this in Pittsburgh where the hotel rooms just aren’t adequate. Perhaps what ARII was doing was laying the first piece of groundwork for an indoor stadium. If you’ve caught the reaction to Cleveland’s new domed stadium then if I were Mr. Rooney I’d forget the idea. Furthermore, any new stadium – domed or not – isn’t likely to be on the North Shore. There just isn’t room. I honestly have no idea why he suggested it to be honest.

The Latest Podcast

Episode 472 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc is available. We put on a bow on the Steelers’ Draft, discussed Broderick Jones not getting his fifth-year option and of course, the latest on Aaron Rodgers.

Rumors

There has been some talk that the Steelers are reaching their breaking point with Aaron Rodgers. After placing a little used free agent tender on him, there are some reports that the front office is done waiting. I believe it when I see it.

Allar

Obviously everyone has an opinion on the drafting of Penn State QB Drew Allar. It was my opinion that had they taken him in the fourth round, I would have been able to accept that much more than using their first of three third round selections. That aside, we all need to take a step by and give the kid – and Will Howard for that matter – an opportunity. Let’s see what he does with better coaching and better receivers around him. I still have significant reservations about his long-term prospects but that doesn’t mean I can’t give him an opportunity.

This Should Be Celebrated

I swear… Everyone is constantly looking for something to bitch about. Fernando Mendoza said over the weekend that he will not attend the Indiana Football visit to the White House this month.

I’m on the bottom of the totem pole here. I’ve got to prove myself,” Mendoza told reporters Saturday. “I can’t miss practice. I don’t have the calendar, but as a rookie, I don’t think that’s a good look. I want to try to best serve my teammates, and I don’t know if that’d be accomplishing that goal.” (h/t) Yahoo Sports

This is exactly what I want to hear if I’m the owner, the head coach, the coaching staff, the players and the fans of the Raiders. He’s not dissing the President or the process. He’s putting his teammates and his future ahead of anything else. I remember a time when we celebrated this type of commitment in America.

Random Reads

Apparently Mike McCarthy is limiting how much access the media will have as compared with time under Mike Tomlin. I find that interesting… Sounds like the schedule will be released around May 18th… The Pirates are on the road for the opening week of the NFL season so the Steelers may open at home which doesn’t happen often… It’s been a long time since the Steelers have had a late BYE week. Seems like we are due for one… For those of you that think pundits are too negative then never fear, Russell Wilson is being courted by CBS for a TV gig… Brandon Sorsby, the now maligned QB of Texas Tech, may enter the NFL Supplemental Draft this summer. He’s thought to have NFL talent so someone may take a chance but there’s risk with all of the gambling issues surrounding him. No, I do not think the Steelers will select him.
