Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

Those of you old enough to remember may recall this saying from the good old days of Pro Hockey. “I went to a hockey game last night and boxing match broke out.” This of course referenced the fact that the game featured a lot of fights. So the other night the Pittsburgh Penguins opened their season at home and as I’ve told many people who have asked me about this, “Only in Pittsburgh.” During the game, a very loud and very clear chant resonated inside the arena and it sounded very similar to “Fire Matt Canada.” But this couldn’t be happening at a hockey game could it? Oh you bet your Turkey Hill Sweet Tea it was! I would have thought that most fans were there to find new hope with Steelers (despite being 3-2) looking rather bleak. A new hockey season starting seemed sure to take the Steelers off the minds of the fans but nope. That was not to be the case. Gotta love the passion of the Steel City.

Steelers History

It may be an off week for our Steelers but it sure isn’t for our resident historian Gordon. This week he looks back at the origins of one of the most iconic photographs in NFL history and how the Steelers played a big part in it.

The Podcast

Episode 339 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc airs LIVE tonight at 10pm over on our YouTube Channel. You can of course grab the audio version at any number of music/podcast outlets. We’ll discuss the win over Baltimore, the fans fascination with “Fire Matt Canada” and look ahead to the rest of the season as well.

D-J

You’ve probably heard by now that wide receiver Diontae Johnson said earlier this week that he’s going to be on the field when the Steelers return from their BYE week in Los Angeles. This comes at a time when George Pickens is really starting to come into his own and one can’t help but wonder how Johnson’s return will affect that. I’ll take the optimist’s view. I can’t imagine a defense trying to double both of them so picking your poison will be part of a coordinator’s weekly struggle. Sadly, I don’t have a lot of faith in Matt Canada to scheme things in their favor but it will also be a good opportunity for Kenny Pickett to continue developing his ability to read pre and post snap.

No Thank You

According to local sports enthusiast Andrew Filliponi, the Steelers are interested in either Jay Gruden or Jim Caldwell as a replacement for Matt Canada in 2024. He cited a “Steelers Insider.” First of all, the Steelers would never comment on something like this. Even if those conversations were happening they would be in incredibly small circles and would not be leaked. Secondly, the Steelers need to find a dynamic play-caller who doesn’t have a history in the league. These two re-treads would bring very little to the table in my opinion.
