Good Thursday to you Steelers’ Fans.
As we await the beginning of Training Camp which is still a month away, I’m looking deep inside the Steelers’ roster for potential answers to important questions. Today I’m diving into the defensive backs and am focusing on a few of the young guys in particular. Obviously the discussion begins with Artie Burns who is doing all of the right things to remain on the roster but will that be enough? As of right now he is likely to be cut loose. The team has already declined his fifth year option and while the tools are there, Burns just can’t seem to put everything together.
Mike Hilton is doing all of the right things by participating in all of the offseason programs. As an Exclusive Rights Free Agent he has few options but is trying to follow the footsteps of Alejandro Villanueva who did the same and earned a new contract. Hilton’s situation is a bit different because his performance waned late last year and there could be viable competition for his job. Big Al did not face that. Give Hilton credit though for doing it the right way.

What about Brian Allen? This guy is tall and long and seemingly has what it takes but just hasn’t done enough to get a helmet each week. His time is running out.
The same could be said for Cam Sutton, a former third round pick who has shown some flashes yet just hasn’t been able to put it all together. There has been discussion about a move to safety but we don’t see it. He just doesn’t posses the physicality needed which was a concern of ours coming into the Draft.
And then there’s Marcus Allen. A former fifth round pick Allen has been rumored to be moving to linebacker which would be curious. We weren’t impressed with Allen’s athleticism coming out of Penn State and gaining weight may hinder that even more. That said, I’m more than open to change if Allen proves he can contribute there. We need to see it before we believe it however.
