SCB Steelers Hot Reads – This Change Isn’t Much Change

Hey Steelers Fans. Welcome to Thursday.

The Kickoff

When the season ended and Mike Tomlin spoke about change, I guess I expected more. A lot more. It is what it is however and to this point the only change we’ve seen is with two assistant coaches. Inside Linebackers Coach Aaron Curry left for the same job with the New York Jets while Defensive Backs Coach Grady Brown did not have his contract renewed. The Steelers announced that Gerald Alexander was taking over the defensive backs. He was here in 2022 and 2023 before taking a job in Las Vegas as the Safeties Coach. To my knowledge the Inside LB job remains open. Alexander specializes in getting his men to turn the ball over which is obviously a good thing. But let’s also hope that he can reduce the amount of confusion and lessen those communication problems we’ve become accustomed to in the secondary. When Tomlin spoke of ‘change’ I was thinking more along the lines of defensive coordinator and offensive line coach but both of those men remain in their roles. I guess the more things change they do stay the same. Or in this case the less things change…

Now Here’s a Nugget of Info…

We’ll be discussing this tonight for sure.

Introducing…

I’m really excited to announce that we have a new person joining us here at SCB. We don’t often take on new contributors largely because I’m a control freak (not really) but I’ve always wanted someone who had a passion for the Draft. Please give Cliff a warm welcome by reading his first feature which looks at Ohio State wide receiver Emeka Egbuka.

The Podcast

We will air episode 408 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc tonight at 10pmET on our YouTube channel. Tonight’s topics will include… Could this fan base survive a bad season? Would you be willing to have some bad years in order to get to a Super Bowl? Plus all the latest buzz on free agents, the draft and more.

Really Good Stuff Here

Ryan Clark has done an incredible job transitioning from the field to the media world and his podcast is one of the best. Here he is with James Harrison.

Say What?

Chiefs’ wideout DeAndre Hopkins blamed a lot of the team’s failures Sunday on the officiating. Umm, what? Yes there were a few questionable calls (especially early) but nothing the officials did kept Kansas City from winning. In fact Hopkins may want to look in the mirror. Had he not stumbled over his own feet he would have been able to catch that throw from Patrick Mahomes when he was wide open.

Something That Would Surprise Me

Not that I’m expecting this but… The Steelers need to get more dynamic at tight end. Pat Freiermuth is a good player but he’s not a guy that any defense loses sleep over. Darnell Washington is a blocking tight end who quite frankly doesn’t get enough chances over the middle. Therefore, with a pretty deep tight end class, I would love to see the Steelers draft a guy who is a bit of a ‘tweener’ if you will. A guy who blocks a bit but also a guy who can stretch a defense. I don’t expect this but I would really like it if it happened.

I refuse to become a Steelers “aggregation” website. Don’t know what that means? Look at some of the stuff that gets published on other Steelers-related sites. There are stories there with only one thing in mind – get you to click. It’s my hope that our content continues to be thoughtful and meaningful… DeShon Elliott certainly didn’t hold back on his feelings of Aaron Rodgers coming here. Most of the fans agree with him… Not sure about you but I’m over winter. Warmer weather can get here anytime!
