Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.
As the second part of OTAs “Phase 3” got underway yesterday, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger had the opportunity to speak to the media via Zoom Conference. I can only imagine how much the beat writers want to be done with these… Seven spoke on a number of topics including his contract situation, Dwayne Haskins, JuJu Smith-Schuster and the his future. There was not a whole lot that Roethlisberger gave us to chew on to be very honest. His announcement that it was his decision to go to the Steelers and offer a reduction in pay wasn’t overly shocking. As he told me when I interviewed him at his football camp several years ago “he loves Pittsburgh.” His long-term goal is to stay and raise his family there so I think he was doing his best to make sure he didn’t have the ugliness that has surrounded other QBs late in their careers. He mentioned the big arm of Haskins and said “he could throw a ball through a car wash without it getting wet.” Some fans took this as an opportunity to say that this is all Haskins has because the rest of his game sucks. Well, I’m pretty sure that’s not what Seven was saying anyway. He mentioned his arm not his overall body of work. Relax people… Big Ben also made clear that there’s no one he’d rather have on third down than Smith-Schuster who made his debut at OTAs yesterday as well. As for his future, Roethlisberger is very much taking this one step at a time. He admitted he wore down last year and took much of the blame for the late season collapse. Any discussion of 2022 will be on the shelf for the foreseeable future let’s put it that way.

Mental Health
There has obviously been a lot of discussion about mental health with the situation surrounding tennis player Naomi Osaka and I think as NFL fans we have to expect it will become more a part of our conversations as well. Chris Wormley admitted last week that he had some struggles last year after being traded from Baltimore to Pittsburgh. My advice with all of this is really simple. Put yourselves in someone else’s shoes before judging them.
Cowher and Spygate
I will always love and respect former Steelers’ Head Coach Bill Cowher. He just released a book this week that details a lot of his life, coaching and his family. He also again addressed Spygate and refused to say it cost his team in the AFC Title game nearly 20 years ago. I admire that he’s taking the high road and isn’t using it as an excuse saying his team “didn’t execute well enough” but there was a reason for that. The Patriots knew what the Steelers were doing. Many players from that game have gone on record saying the Patriots often shouted out what was coming based solely on formations. Cowher claims he once put a five or ten pound plate in his boxer shorts at a Pro Day like event when he was trying to get noticed by the NFL. He said that type of thing was no different than what New England did. I certainly disagree and I wonder what continues to make Cowher feel the way he does. Remember, the NFL destroyed all of the tapes. You don’t do that if there isn’t a problem.
