SCB Steelers Draft Stock Report: Can we ever get a franchise QB?

Alright folks it’s been a little while since I’ve put out a stock report. What a crazy college football season so far! A lot of the early first round favorites have fallen and there are some new names in the mix. As a reminder, I’m looking at positions that I feel are of need for the Steelers only.

Stock up

Dante Moore, QB, Oregon

Over the summer, Moore was not getting any buzz as a 1st round draft pick. However his play this season has really stood out and he has the ability to make plays with his arms and legs. He has good height at 6’3 and still has room to fill out his frame. He’s got a strong arm but also seems to recognize when touch passes are needed.

Germie Bernard, WR, Alabama

Ryan Williams gets a lot of attention but Bernard continues to rise up draft boards. He was initially projected as a mid-round selection, but Alabama has used him all over the field, including as a RB and even as a QB. Bernard does not have off the charts athleticism, but he has a high football IQ and does not take any plays off. He’s a gritty receiver and one of my personal favorites for the Steelers.

Chris Bell, WR, Louisville

Chris Bell reminds me of a bigger Deebo Samuel. He’s 6’2, 220 pounds but runs very well for his size. As would be expected, he is hard to bring down and is a YAC monster. Bell has a track background and great speed as well. He’s also a willing blocker.

Kamari Ramsey, S, USC

Ramsey is a free safety prospect with good speed and coverage ability. He has shown consistent improvement and is improving his stock week to week. He is not in the same category as Caleb Downs, but I would not be surprised to see him selected in the 2nd round.

Stock down

Cade Klubnik, QB, Clemson

Klubnik was once considered a surefire 1st round pick. Now there is question about his ability to be anything more than a college quarterback. Klubnik does not have any traits that stand out as elite, and in my personal opinion Pittsburgh needs to steer clear.

Drew Allar, QB, Penn State

Allar looks Like an NFL QB. He has the size, the arm, and all the traits to be a great pocket passer. Which is why he can be so frustrating to watch. He gets far too panicked when under any kind of pressure. In big games he seems to fold when his team needs him to carry them most. A great quarterback coach may be able to work with Allar and get the most out of him; and I have no confidence that the Steelers coaching staff is capable of that.

Next time I hope to get a little more in depth with prospects for the secondary and maybe take a look at some running backs. As it stands right now, the Steelers sit atop the AFC North so they may play themselves out of franchise quarterback contention yet again. However if we have a chance at that 7th Lombardi Trophy- who the hell cares! Go Steelers!
