The unimaginable is now official. Aaron Rodgers is a Pittsburgh Steeler after signing his one-year deal today. Perhaps “unimaginable” isn’t the right word but it sure feels appropriate.
Take yourself back to Super Bowl XLV. Would you have ever dreamed the guy carving up our vaunted defense would one day be a Steeler? I sure wouldn’t have but then again, this is the NFL. Loyalty and commitment are largely out the window and one team’s trash is suddenly another team’s treasure.
Rodgers will get $10 million guaranteed of the $13 plus million he has signed for and for the most part… That’s not terrible for a QB these days. The fact Rodgers is 41 and is less than two years removed from an Achilles tear is a big reason why he comes on the cheap. Those are big reasons as to my doubts and concerns about his overall ability for 2025 too.
In the short term, the biggest question is whether the fan base will accept Rodgers. I can save you the drama on this one. If he is winning more than he’s losing then he’ll be embraced. Not like “both arms hugging” embraced but more like a “good to have you” hand on the shoulder type of thing. I think you can see the difference right? This isn’t a homegrown guy and he couldn’t be further from it, but if he’s winning? Few will care.
I haven’t been a fan of this since the moment it became a thing but I’m also not going to start burning jerseys either. I root for the logo not the player and by the way, he’s wearing number eight. Wearing 12 would have been unimaginable…
