WPIAL Semifinal and Quarterfinal Results

The second round of WPIAL playoff action is in the books. The four largest classifications held their semifinals tonight with the winners advancing to the Championship Games next week at Heinz Field. In 2A and 1A, the quarterfinals took place tonight and the semifinals will be held next week at neutral sites before their Championship Games at Robert Morris University. Here’s a look at tonight’s results and next week’s matchups.

6A Semifinal Results

1. Pine-Richland 49, 5. North Allegheny 25
2. Central Catholic 17, 6. Penn Hills 8

6A Championship Matchup

1. Pine-Richland vs 2. Central Catholic

Pine-Richland is making their first trip to Heinz Field since winning the WPIAL title in 2014. No reports yet if their student section will bring a live ram to Heinz Field this time or not. Central Catholic is the two-time defending WPIAL Champions and is making their fifth straight appearance at Heinz Field.

5A Semifinal Results

1. Penn Trafford 35, 4. Upper St Clair 14
2. Gateway 28, 3. McKeesport 21

5A Championship Matchup

1. Penn-Trafford vs 2. Gateway

Penn-Trafford reaches the Championship Game for the 2nd time in the last 3 seasons and is looking for their first title in school history. Gateway is making their first trip to Heinz Field since losing 3 straight title games from 2007-2009. The Gators have not won a WPIAL title since 1986.

4A Semifinal Results

4. Montour 35, 1. South Fayette 27
3. Thomas Jefferson 27, 2. Belle Vernon 0

4A Championship Matchup

3. Thomas Jefferson vs 4. Montour

Thomas Jefferson is the two-time defending WPIAL Champions. This is Montour’s first trip to Heinz Field since winning the 2011 AAA title. These teams met in the first round last year.

3A Semifinal Results

1. Aliquippa 14, 5. Beaver 7
2. Quaker Valley 40, 3. Seton La Salle 7

3A Championship Matchup

1. Aliquippa vs 2. Quaker Valley

The Beaver Valley Conference once again dominated 3A. Incredibly, Aliquippa is making their TENTH consecutive appearance at Heinz Field. This is the first trip to a Championship Game in Quaker Valley history. Prior schools in the area before the consolidation played in 5 title games, the most recent being Sewickley High School’s WPIAL Championship in 1960.
