What If… The Steelers Defense Looks Like This in 2015?

by Steeldad

I’m guilty of a lot of things when it comes to the Steelers as I’m sure you are. I sit at my keyboard and in front of my screen watching guys on video and I wonder if they would be right for the Steelers whether as  draft picks or free agents.

Sometimes I’m right and sometimes I’m wrong. Today though I was reminded that maybe there are already guys on this roster that will be significant contributors or even starters.

Bear with me as I take an optimistic approach to the Steelers 2015 Defense.

Defensive Ends: Cam Heyward, Stephon Tuitt

Nose Tackle: Steve McLendon/Daniel McCullers

Outside Linebackers: Jarvis Jones, Shawn Lemon

Inside Linebackers: Lawrence Timmons, Ryan Shazier

Safeties: Mike Mitchell, Ian Wild

Cornerbacks: William Gay, (player to be named)

I say “player to be named” because I believe the Steelers are going to sign a starter in free agency so let’s leave it at that. Cortez Allen will get a shot to recapture his spot but it won’t be successful.

Now let’s get to the two guys who I know you have to be howling about.

Who’s to say that Lemon or Wild can’t start? Lemon comes from the Canadian Football League where he had 14 sacks and recovered eight fumbles. At 6’2″ and 250lbs., why can’t he start at OLB if he can be stout against the run and get to the quarterback?

Wild is a longer shot in my opinion who also comes from the CFL but at 6’1″ and 220lbs. who’s to say he couldn’t move to safety? He has a big-time motor and hits with everything he has. He’s also a long snapper who excelled at getting off the block to get down field. His speed is a bit questionable at 4.66 in the forty but he wouldn’t be the first slower safety to play in the NFL.

Shamarko Thomas has to be the favorite for that position but knowing he had all of one snap on defense last year makes me wonder if the team is ready for him there.

Am I thinking outside the box today? Absolutely I am but isn’t is about time we got a bit of a break when it comes to some new talent?

No Moats on the outside? You think Lemon beats him out? Is your out of the box aka for out of your mind..LOL. j/k, but I do think Lemon could be something special regardless.

“What IF” we had a GM & scouts who knew what they were doing! Who have 120% job security. Poor Keith Butler finally gets his shot @ DC & he’s left w/ NOTHING resembling a NFL (middle of the pack) Defense.
