Trump or Not, Roethlisberger’s Politics Shouldn’t Matter

by Steeldad

It’s amazing in today’s world how easily we become attached to other people. If I say I was at the same golf course as Tiger Woods then I’ll get all kinds of comments both good and bad regardless of whether I actually met him or not. Even if I’d have played 18 holes with that doesn’t make us “buddies for life.”

Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has played golf with Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump before. If we use 21st century, social media-style logic then that means that Roethlisberger therefore calls Trump “Uncle Donald” and has made him Godfather of his most recent child.

Well… Not quite.

Ya see, there’s been speculation the last few days that Big Ben would show up at Trump’s coronation in Cleveland next month after Trump praised the Super Bowl winner and said he’d like him and Patriots’ QB Tom Brady to be there. Roethlisberger has reportedly  declined the invitation but is it really that big of a deal?

I do not support Mr. Trump nor do I support Hillary Clinton. What I do support is that we all have the right to choose who we want to support. If Roethlisberger were to attend the convention that would be his choice and his opinion and your opinion shouldn’t mean doodily squat.

What I really support is the Steelers and that’s my concern. Players on our team make decisions and have likes and dislikes that we won’t ever agree with but it’s their right. It comes with the idea of supporting a team of individuals from different backgrounds.

Athletes in general have typically stayed away from political and social issues during their careers mostly in order to avoid controversy. Whether that played into Roethlisberger’s thinking here is uncertain and  it doesn’t matter any more than our opinion of his choices do either.

You can’t blame Trump however for wanting Big Ben in Cleveland. All he does is win there, right?
