Top 10 Recent Battlebots Fights

by Ian

Now that the NFL Draft is behind us, there isn’t much in terms of exciting football news that will happen until teams hit training camp in mid-July. One of the additions to Steel City Blitz this off-season will be coverage of the new season of Battlebots. This will be the third season of the revamped Battlebots show. The original show was a staple of late night Comedy Central programming in the early 2000s but was cancelled because of legal disagreements over licensing. In 2015, it was resurrected by ABC and ran for two seasons (Seasons 6 and 7). Now it has been picked up by the Discovery Channel and the Science Channel for a 2018 run.

We will have full coverage of the new season, which begins on FRIDAY, MAY 11 at 8pm. In preparation for the new season, we already took a look back at 10 of the best fights from the Comedy Central era. Now we will rundown the 10 best from the recent 2015-2016 seasons.

LET THE BOT BATTLE BEGIN

10. Minotaur vs Warhead

Season 7, Round of 16

The Brazilian sensation Minotaur proved to be one of the early surprises of Season 7, annihilating Photon Storm and Blacksmith. In the Round of 16, it met the British bot Warhead who had gotten a free pass with Obwalden Overlord in the Qualifying stage then had an epic bout with Complete Control (more on that later) in the first round. This fight featured the vertical spinning drum of Minotaur against the horizontal disc spinner of Warhead and is best remembered for Minotaur literally decapitating Warhead.

9. Bronco vs Stinger

Season 6, Quarterfinals

This one was short, sweet, and epic. Stinger displayed a new flamethrower weapon and Bronco became the first bot in season 6 to successfully get itself off the dead zone above the screws. This was a great back-and-forth battle until Stinger got thrown in a flaming heap into the cordoned-off on-ramp into the Battlebox and had no way to return to the fighting ring. This was a huge flaw in the battlebox design that prematurely ended an epic fight.

8. Yeti vs Tombstone

Season 7, Semifinals

In a massive showdown between drum spinner and horizontal spinner, this fight featured some big-time hits in the first moments of the match. Tombstone decimated Yeti’s tires but Yeti hung around and drove on a half a front tire for most of the match AND managed to get himself off the screws. Both bots finished the fight without functional weapons and it devolved into a pushing contest in the last minute.

7. BETA vs Lucky

Season 7, Qualifying

BETA had literally been waiting decades for this opportunity. The bot had been scheduled to appear in Battlebots Season 5 but had a design flaw and was not permitted to compete. In Season 6, they had to forfeit because the builders could not get the bot to function. Finally, in Season 7 BETA got their opportunity to compete and the unluckiest bot in Battlebots history drew a bot named…Lucky. This was a back-and-forth battle between a hammer and a flipper with big hits from both throughout.

6. Warhead vs Complete Control

Season 7, Round of 32

This fight matched up two bots that dominated their opening round fights. Warhead didn’t even use it’s regular spinning disc and overmatched Obwalden Overlord while Complete Control used it’s clamping arm and blowtorch to perform a face-melting guitar solo on Bombshell. The prior season, Warhead had struggled against wedges (Stinger and Bite Force) while Complete Control had historically not fared well against spinners. This fight featured one of the most incredible KO’s in Battlebots history as the British bot Warhead paid tribute to the Rolling Stones as the flames climbed high into the night...

6. Bronco vs Witch Doctor

Season 6, Qualifying

This was one of the first fights of the re-aired Battlebots in 2015. It certainly lived up to the billing as bots were permitted to use fire as a weapon. Bronco was the continuation of Inertia Labs’ classic design they had used to win Giant Nuts with superheavyweight Toro and middleweight T-minus. Witch Doctor came in with a great minibot design and powerful spinner. Unfortunately, this match ended far to early as Witch Doctor got stuck in the dead zone above the screws.

4. Tombstone vs Bite Force

Season 6, Championship

Tombstone looked like an unbeatable force, cruising through the Season 6 bracket to the Championship. In the semifinals, Tombstone got greedy and went for an extra kill shot against Bronco, which sent Tombstone flying and its batteries spilling out across the battlebox. The residual damage to Tombstone carried over to the final and Tombstone’s weapon was not fully functional. Bite Force did a masterful job of driving and surviving the initial assault to take control and win the Giant Nut.

3. Hypershock vs Warrior Clan

Season 7, Round of 32

THE RAKENING

To combat Warrior Clan’s done, Hypershock made one of the greatest adjustments in Battlebots history to attach a garden rake to their bot and totally annihilate the drone.

2. Yeti vs Chomp

Season 7, Quarterfinals

The real Song of Ice and Fire was not some book series that will never actually see the ending written. It was the showdown between the Alaskan Ice King Yeti and the fire-breathing Chomp.

1. Tombstone vs BETA

Season 7, Quarterfinals

The answer to “can anything hold up to Tombstone’s spinner?” apparently is BETA’s front armor. BETA tossed Tombstone around the ring, using the energy from his spinning blade to send the favorite careening around the box. Tombstone took a pounding from BETA and the pulverizers, but hung around and dismantled BETA’s weapon. The bots went back and forth with incredible damage all the way to the end.
