Steelers Undrafted Free Agent Rogers Could Shake Up the Receiving Corps

by Steeldad

When you watch former Louisville Cardinals’ receiver Eli Rogers’ highlight video you notice a couple of things right away.

First, when he caught touchdown passes his routes were very crisp looking slants and skinny posts. Secondly, when the play broke down, Rogers was excellent at finding open space where his quarterback could him.

The reason both of those things stand out is because they all took place in the red zone. In case you weren’t aware, the Steelers have struggled in this area in recent years and will look for any way possible for improvement.

Rogers went undrafted and I think the Steelers couldn’t have been happier about it.

If you are looking for consistency then look no further than Rogers. In four seasons at Louisville, he recorded seasons of 42, 46, 44 and 45 receptions. He also averaged just over 500 yards receiving per season and finished with a career average of 11.5 yards per catch.

Toss in the 12 career touchdown receptions and you’ve got a young man who must be accounted for on the football field.

If Rogers sounds too be good to be true then let me remind you he’s also dabbled in punt returning as well. In 29 career returns, Rogers has an average of 8.6 yards per return for his career. Not staggering by any stretch but consider his average jumped from 6.8 to 8.2 to 10.2 in his final season.

At 5′ 10″ and about 190 pounds, Rogers isn’t going to be confused with Martavis Bryant but if Rogers flashes the type of consistency he showed for the Cardinals then perhaps he’ll find himself next to Bryant on the roster in 2015.
